Chapter 22
Quickly the
conversation in the big hall began to spread, one to ten, ten to a hundred, all
throughout the entirety of the Water Cloud Sect. Then, like a stone that can
create a thousand ripples, it set off a huge wave of controversy.
Many of the outer
school disciples all believed this was a great opportunity and applied to join
the competition. Some of the more arrogant outer disciples even claimed, if
combat was really enough to obtain qualifications to enter the inner sect, then
that qualification should be theirs.
This view, Jizi Ang was happy to see. Although Wen Xuan
and Qi Jibai both had given plenty of praises for Jian Yi, Jizi Ang really
didn't feel that Jian Yi was the most capable disciple from the outer school.
The more opportunities to kick Jian Yi down was naturally better. However,
there was no way he could let Jian Yi defend in place and fight 1 v all. That
would be too blatantly
unjust and allowing
that to happen would be too harmful to Jizi Ang's benevolent and reserved outer
appearance.
Therefore, a huge
competition between the outer disciples was set up. All of the outer disciples
were to fight 1v1 in a knockout competition. The winner of each bracket was to
continue on until only one person was standing. Then, the winner would be given
the qualifications to enter the inner sect.
This plan sounded fair and reasonable, as well as
extremely impartial. Everyone was very satisfied.
However, there was an
additional condition for Jian Yi: If Jian Yi wasn't the final victor, because
of his previous nefarious actions to enter the inner Sect via a backdoor by
overexaggerating his own abilities, he'd immediately be expelled from the sect.
"Jian shidi, I'm
sorry." As Wen Xuan picked out the magic tools to Jian Yi, he sighed: "This
time, I really talked big and caused trouble for you."
"Shixiong, what do
you mean by that?" Jian Yi asked him with a smile: "Do you not think
I can win?"
"Of course I
do." Wen Xuan pulled out a bamboo flute. Turning it in his hand and
examining for a moment, he put it in Jian Yi's hand. Then, he continued to
search for others: "But in the end, I still caused trouble for you."
"It's trouble, but
it's also an opportunity." Jian Yi lightly tapped that bamboo flute.
This bamboo flute
wasn't any top-notch magic tool. It can only send out some wind blades with the
sound of music. More aesthetic than practical. Back in the days, Wen Xuan
didn't really like using it. Later, Wen Xuan's inventory was finite so he put
away many of the magic tools he used during qi refining stage. But regardless
if they were functional or not, he was taking them all out for Jian Yi to try.
"If I can come out
as the victor in front of the crowd in this outer school competition, the
benefits I can gain will far surpass this little trouble." Jian Yi said
with a faint smile: "I should thank shixiong for obtaining this
opportunity for me."
"You're rather
full of confidence." Wen Xuan threw a cloth bag at him.
Jian Yi reached up and
caught it: "Then with your understanding of the outer school disciples,
what do you think my likelihood of winning is?"
Now he was really
asking the right person. Wen Xuan knew every single one of the inner Water
Cloud Sect disciples. He also knew quite a few outer disciples. Wen Xuan
pondered for a moment and then smiled helplessly: "Actually, there really
are a few troublesome fellows."
But he didn't say these words with concern. No matter how
troublesome, they weren't Jian Yi in the end. Very few people could have dealt
with a level 3 demonic beast with the skill and decisiveness that Jian Yi
exhibited back then. Not to mention the rather intricate scheme he used to deal
with Xue Bing Er afterwards.
Nevertheless, Jian Yi
still held out a piece of jade in front of Wen Xuan's eyes: "Shixiong, can
you list those troublesome fellows out for me?" It looked like he really
wasn't holding back here. Not only did he plan to win, he planned to crush his
opponents and win beautifully.
Seeing this conduct of
his, Wen Xuan actually felt a bit amused inside and couldn't help but laugh out
loud.
Before the start of the
big competition, the disciples were given a total of three days for
preparation.
In these three days,
Jian Yi followed the list that Wen Xuan made and went to visit those people in
person. Meanwhile, Wen Xuan managed to find a total of 12 magic tools to give
to Jian Yi to use. In addition to that bamboo flute and the cloth bag that can
let out a dense fog, there was a low level, high quality sword, 5 pieces of
protective gears, a pair of boots, and several supplementary backup equipment,
all for Jian Yi to pick and choose on his own. Then Wen Xuan used a portion of
his Sect contribution points and prepared some talisman and medicinal pill
related things for Jian
Yi.
In this busy
preparation, three days passed in a flash.
Jian Yi headed to this
arena that was set up in the outer grounds. Looking at the competition schedule
in his hand, he instantly clicked his tongue and laughed coldly. What a
coincidence. According to this schedule, he was likely to encounter every
single one of the ten troublesome fellows that Wen Xuan had listed for him
beforehand.
This intention was
abundantly clear. However, other than him, who'd notice this little trickery
placed within the competition. Most people would only think it's a coincidence.
With a smile, Jian Yi shook his head. He gazed deeply at Jizi Ang who was
sitting at the center. Then his line of sight moved left to Chu Lian who was
beside Jizi Ang and landed on Wen Xuan who was behind Chu Lian. He smiled and
nodded his head at Wen Xuan.
The bell for the start
of the outer school competition sounded at this moment.
The number of disciples
in the outer school of the Water Cloud Sect was several times that of the inner
school. If someone wanted to emerge as the final victor, they'd have to go
through a total of 13 matches. In the first three matches, Jian Yi faced rather
normal opponents. Therefore, these three matches to Jian Yi can only be
described with one word-- annihilation.
As soon as he got on
stage, Jian Yi's figure became a flash. While his opponents were still dazing
off, a fireball already flew over and hit them in the face. One breath later,
the outcome of the match was decided.
All three matches were won exactly this same way, in the
same speedy fashion.
To have this kind of
performance, 1st was because of the shoes that Jian Yi was wearing, which
increased his speed more than normal people. 2nd was because the fireball he
fired was from a tricky angle. Before his opponent could see where it came from
clearly, it already hit its target. And most importantly, the advantage was
because of their reaction and awareness. The
difference between
someone who has experienced life and death and a regular outer sect disciple
was just this huge.
These three matches
were won so beautifully that instantly, it attracted surprised cheers. Since
this competition was originally set up because of Jian Yi, a large number of
people had their eyes on him. Jizi Ang and some of the Elders saw this and
their face color turned black.
Moments later, however, Jizi Ang smiled again. No rush,
the arrangements he made were for later on anyways.
On his 4th match, Jian
Yi encountered his first 'troublesome' opponent.
Then...... he spent
three breaths.
This was because of a magic tool that Wen Xuan gave Jian
Yi, a talisman bag that Jian Yi wore on his waist. It didn't have any other
use, but it got rid of the need to manually reach for a talisman. With a silent
mutter and a small amount of spiritual energy as catalyst, the talisman bag can
automatically dispense the talismans that's placed within it. It really was an
equipment too suitable for jian Yi.
At the moment, that
talisman bag was filled to the brim. With a single thought, Jian Yi can send a
dozen talismans flying out. The display itself was enough to scare someone to
death.
"You let me
win." Jian Yi cupped his hand and gave a faint smile to the unfortunate
fellow that he already knocked unconscious.
Watching above the
stage, Jizi Ang gave a cold smile: "He's just using talismans to his
advantage, that's all."
His words didn't finish
completely yet. On another stage, there was a huge commotion. Another person
threw out a pile of talismans and won the match. On close examination, this
just happened to be the 2nd son of the Zhang Clan who was praised by some of
the Elders for being 'hardworking and diligent' before.
"Sect Leader,
please reflect on your words." Wen Xuan said respectfully.
Jizi Ang awkwardly
waved his hand and chuckled: "Using talismans well naturally requires a
certain kind of talent as well. However, if one wants to win until the end,
it's not enough to just depend on talismans."
"This disciple also agrees with this thought."
Wen Xuan continued to remain respectful.
As they conversed, the
5th match started. Coincidentally, this time Jian Yi's opponent was that 2nd
son of the Zhang clan.
This match of talisman vs talisman instantly started
splendidly.
Three breaths later, it
also came to an end.
Jian Yi stood beside
the 2nd son of the Zhang family who was laying on the ground, groaning in pain
endlessly. He patted his hands off and revealed the lonely expression of an
undefeated warrior
"Using talismans
well requires a certain kind of talent as well." Wen Xuan said with a
smile: "As expected, the Sect Leader is really wise."
Although that 2nd son
of the Zhang clan had many talismans, not a single one of them landed on Jian
Yi. Meanwhile, Jian Yi's footsteps were lithe, eyesight even sharper. Every
single talisman hit like blades. Because of this, of course there was no
suspense in the outcome of this battle.
With a darkened face, Jizi Ang completely ignored Wen
Xuan's words. When all of the outer disciples finished their 5th round. He
stood up and raised his hand to subdue the cacophony on and off the stage. He
raised his voice and said: "Today, five matches have passed. All of you
disciples must be tired now. Let's rest here for the night. The rest of the 7
matches will continue tomorrow."
Saying this, he looked deeply at the talisman bag that was
still filled to the brim hanging on Jian Yi's waist: "Furthermore. There's
a rule that must be changed a bit. Today, many disciples used talismans.
Although talismans is one path of cultivation, it greatly depends on wealth.
Many of the outer disciples come from impoverished backgrounds. Using this
method is rather unfair to them. Therefore, from tomorrow on, this big
competition will prohibit talisman use."
After he finished
making this speech, he finally sat back down with a smile, feeling somewhat more
relieved inside.
However, when he looked
at Wen Xuan who was beside Chu Lian, then looked at Jian Yi who was below on
the stage, Jizi Ang discovered that the expressions on their faces were even
happier than his own.
After everyone
dispersed, Jian Yi came over next to Wen Xuan. He reached his hand into that
talisman bag and took out the stack of things inside, grinning ear to ear and
completely unable to conceal his delight: "The grand Sect Leader really
gave us a big helping hand here."
In this stack of things, only a few pieces on top were
usable talismans. The rest was all waste paper stuffed into the talisman bag.
"It's all because
of your little schemes." Wen Xuan shook his head exasperatedly.
"And Shixiong's
coordination that instigated our grand Sect Leader into action." Smiling,
Jian Yi rubbed against Wen Xuan's side, pulling on the other's elbow: "Now
we don't have to worry about those rich people."
Wen Xuan sighed and
reminded him: "Wealth... isn't only used on talismans."
"If we must discuss
magic tools. Shixiong, you've given me this many. Each and every one of them
are pretty strong." Jian Yi expressed firmly: "Why do I need to
fear?'
Wen Xuan knew, these
words were purely for comfort.
Sure enough, in the
battles on the second day, in his first match, Jian Yi already encountered an
opponent with a very powerful magic tool.
This was the grandson
of that one Elder.
With a grandfather as
an Elder in the sect, as soon as this grandson stepped on stage, he held up an
extremely powerful and big shield. Although it wasn't as strong as the shield
Luo Qingquan used those many days ago, Jian Yi's offensive skills weren't
comparable to Wen Xuan's back then. No matter how he attacked, he couldn't get
through the shield. When he swung his sword at it, it didn't even make a dent.
Not to mention, this person was also extremely vigilant. No matter how fast
Jian Yi was, he couldn't circle around to attack from another angle.
If it's only defense,
then everything would have been fine. However, in his other hand, this person
also held a huge sword. Everytime he locked onto Jian Yi's location, held the
shield up and suddenly tackled Jian Yi, he'd follow up with a sword cleave.....
Fortunately, Jian Yi was able to dodge successfully every time. Otherwise, if
he got hit directly, it would have hurt very much.
After a while, Jian Yi
stopped fighting close range and only circled at a distance. Occasionally, he
used his bamboo flute to send out wind blades for harassment. Every time the
flute sent out a blade, it made a musical note. Note after note, it actually
sounded pretty good. But this sound was like a guiding light. His opponent
didn't even need to see where he was. He only needed to listen to the sound,
then raise his hand to be able to block the attack easily.
Above the stage, Jizi Ang and others revealed faint
smiles again. That grandfather who was an Elder smiled like a flower.
"This kid really
doesn't match up to his claims. Look, he's about to lose soon." "Yet
he's still running around everywhere, what's the point?"
Really, it was useless,
Jian Yi knew. If this continued, it'd just waste his energy. Sooner or later,
he'd get caught.
Finally, he encountered
his first proper troublesome' fellow.
Furrowing his brows and grinding his teeth for a moment,
Jian Yi pulled out a cloth bag from his sleeve and opened it.
Instantly, a dense fog
dispersed with him as the center point and covered the entire stage within
seconds. This cloth bag didn't have any killing strength. It can only confuse
people's visions. Also because it wasn't a high quality item so the fog it
released was limited. Good thing, it just happened to cover this stage so the
tool was put to use effectively.
Not long after, Jian
Yi's opponent couldn't see anything.
But there was also a
flaw to this fog. It didn't separate friend and foe. Right now, Jian Yi also
couldn't see-- however, no one knew this fact.
His opponent quickly
increased his vigilance 120% and used the shield to protect himself thoroughly.
Both of his ears were raised, focusing with rapt attention on every single
movement. With keen hearing, he very quickly discovered the sound of Jian Yi's
footsteps.
Just as he attempted to
locate Jian Yi's exact position, he heard another sound abruptly that instantly
covered the sound of the footsteps.
Zheng.
It was the sound
emitted by that bamboo flute!
"Over there!"
The location that this person extrapolated just happened to be a corner of the
stage. Instantly, he became delighted and placed the shield in front of him to
block. Then, charging over, he attempted to push Jian Yi out.
However, at the moment,
a light breeze blew past him.
"Wrong." In
the dense fog, a voice sounded next to his ear. A breath of air blew against
his neck, giving him goosebumps all over. Meanwhile, a cold blade was pressed
against his back: "I'm over here."
23
Chapter 23
In an instant, the
shieldbearer felt goosebumps rise all over his body. He felt like he entered a
world of ice and snow. Even his blood felt chilled.
Within this second, he
heard something hit the floor. Then the view before his eyes flashed. In the
blink of an eye, he suddenly disappeared from that place surrounded by fog.
When he could see again, he was already transported outside of the stage.
The surrounding was
filled with chaotic voices. Many viewers felt bewildered by the situation
before their eyes.
"What's going on?
How come he suddenly came out?" "Just what exactly happened in the
fog?" "Who knows. In any case, he came out, that means he lost."
When the shieldbearer heard
this discussion, he discovered in the aftermath that he was soaked in cold
sweats. Why would he
suddenly be transported
out? This was because of the activation of an auto protection measure placed on
the stage. Right before someone receives a fatal blow, they would be forcibly
transported out of the stage in order to preserve this disciple's life. In
other words, if this wasn't a dueling competition, but some other place, he
would have died already.
On stage, Jian Yi just
happened to recall the fog at this time, revealing the complete view of the
stage. Jian Yi was standing dead center, while in one corner of the stage, laid
a lone bamboo flute that was tossed over there. It was still rolling on the
ground slightly because of the force.
"You let me win."
With a smile, Jian Yi cupped his hands and gestured to the disciple outside of
the stage.
That shieldbearer's
deathly pale face finally alleviated somewhat at this point. By this point, how
could he not know how he lost? But to lose to such a ploy, how could he accept
it: "I really never imagined your spiritual energy can actually reach that
long."
That's right. In order
to make a sound on the bamboo flute, Jian Yi only needed to insert his
spiritual energy into it. He didn't need to hold it in his hand at all. In that
sudden situation with the fog, the shieldbearer subconsciously believed that
Jian Yi was located in the same spot as the flute. This was exactly what Jian
Yi wanted. Not to mention, the distance between Jian Yi and the bamboo flute currently
was really too far for a qi refining cultivator's spiritual energy to
reach...... If it weren't for this fact, the shieldbearer wouldn't have easily
fallen to this trick.
Jian Yi walked over to
the bamboo flute and picked it up. Holding in his hand, he gave it a toss
upward: "Don't think too much. The
radius that my
spiritual energy can reach is pretty much the same as yours. The reason I
managed to do it was because I seized an opportune timing."
At first, the
shieldbearer was still a bit confused, but as he watched Jian Yi toss up that
bamboo flute, catch it, toss it up again, and repeat. Gradually, he understood.
After the bamboo flute
is thrown and leaves Jian Yi's hand, it can travel for a moment and still
remain within the range of his spiritual energy. This allows Jian Yi to send
his spiritual energy and activate it. After being activated, the flute then
creates a sound. The timing is only a mere instant, but in this practically
negligible instant, the bamboo flute can travel to the corner of the stage...
and increase distance away from Jian Yi, just like that.
"An insignificant
parlor trick." This person brushed his sleeve and was even more discontent
with the result.
Jian Yi didn't reply
and only looked at him with a smile. The smile seemed to be asking him: if it
were really an insignificant parlor trick, how could you have fallen to it?
Let's not talk about how this move was even thought up. To control the timing
that precisely, it really wasn't something anyone could do.
The shieldbearer
couldn't think that deeply, however, and only walked away huffing and puffing.
Encountering people who asked him what happened in the fog, he
straightforwardly stated that Jian Yi only won because of a little trick.
This directly caused
the crowd to underestimate Jian Yi's abilities.
The next opponent that
Jian Yi faced got on stage very full of confidence, like he believed as long as
he doesn't get tricked, he'll definitely win.
In the end, he still
lost, losing similarly to an 'insignificant parlor trick.'
This time there was no
fog to block the view. Everyone watched how Jian Yi used all sorts of different
magic tools to set up a little trap and waited for this opponent to jump in it.
The moment right before
Jian Yi obtained victory, the viewers watched how his opponent voluntarily
jumped into the trap and all laughed out loud.
It's true. Jian Yi's
victories didn't display much skills, but it was interesting watching them.
Originally the number
of people watching Jian Yi was already high. After these two victories, he
naturally attracted even more attention.
Then the 3rd match, the
4th match......
Different from
yesterday's complete annihilation and talisman dominance, today, all of Jian
Yi's matches were won barely by a hair. At the start of each match, his
opponents always had the advantage, pushing him back until he could only circle
around the edge of the stage. In the end, however, he always managed to use
some little trick to flip the outcome. At first, those people watching would feel
nervous for him due to his shaky starts. And they'd feel pleasantly surprised
to see him achieve victory in the
end. However, after he
won every match 'by just a hair', then that 'by just a hair' didn't seem quite
so close after all.
It's just like if the
same kind of tricks can achieve success every time, then it wouldn't be called
a trick anymore. Rather, it'd be called intelligence.
Jian Yi was practically
using his every word and action to relay the same information to his opponents:
My skills might not be as strong as yours, but I'm smarter than you guys.
....... Sometimes, this
intellectual advantage was even harder to defeat than physical advantage.
When his fifth opponent
got onto the stage, the guy already looked a bit wilted.
Then, just as Jian Yi
started fighting with this person, finally a viewer noticed a fact: "He
never got injured, not even once."
This fact instantly
spread outward. The entire crowd watching the match started to discuss
enthusiastically. This was a terrifying fact. This represented that: it's not
that Jian Yi didn't have the skills, but rather he's been using his smarts to
save strength.
For him to be able to
steadily avoid every single one of his opponent's attacks, what did this
signify? Some viewers were perhaps incapable of understanding this logic
deeply. However, Jian Yi's 5th opponent at this moment already felt his heart
turn to ash and his hope dashed.
This opponent
originally utilized a swift method of attacking. However, Jian Yi seemed like
he knew exactly how his opponent
would strike before the
other even made his move. Then, he'd use a slower speed to avoid the attack
easily. This was enough to make his opponent more and more perplexed as they
fought.
Therefore, this time,
Jian Yi didn't even finish setting up his trap before his opponent surrendered
the match.
Five victories. While
some people were cheering for Jian Yi, some others discovered an even more
notable fact.
"Wait, have you
guys noticed. His opponent in every match was all very strong?"
This was also another
scary fact. As the knock-out tournament advanced, everyone's opponent naturally
would grow stronger and stronger. But at this moment, in comparison to the
other matches going on concurrently, Jian Yi would always be facing the strongest
opponent. Not to mention, it was the same situation for all 5 matches. The
difficulty level over here was several times higher than that of disciples
competing in other brackets..
"Who'd have this
kind of luck..."
"No way. No matter
how bad someone's luck was, can it reach this point?"
"Don't tell me it
was on purpose. Someone deliberately arranged all the strong disciples together
in one bracket?"
"There's something
fishy going on. Something fishy."
Similar types of
whispers grew more and more, however, at the moment, No one suspected that this
was deliberately done to
target Jian Yi yet. At
most, they felt that whoever arranged these battles wanted to first wear down
the strong competition, so to allow a certain not so strong person to have an
easier time later.
Regardless, now that the 5 matches were all completed and
the sun was about to set, pretty much everyone believed that today's
competition was about to be over. That the last three matches would continue
tomorrow after a night's rest.
However, Jizi Ang sat
in place, without any plans to announce a pause to the competition.
When the bell ran for
the 6th match, the entire crowd was in turmoil.
Jian Yi stretched his
arms briefly. He practically didn't get off the stage and just waited there for
his 6th opponent of the day to get on stage. He already predicted that Jizi Ang
would make him fight this war of attrition. After all, every single one of his
opponents today were fairly tough. Meanwhile, the other people's 5 matches were
complete jokes. No matter what, the energy he consumed should be the greatest.
Continuing the matches would be most disadvantageous to him.
Naturally, he also
prepared for this situation ahead of time.
Jian Yi continued to
use schemes to save his physical strength, always moving and never fighting
head to head. Just as before, he set up traps and waited for his opponent to
step into them.
However, this time,
everyone knew why he chose to do this.
"Don't tell me, he
really has to compete 8 matches continuously?" "How scary......"
Moments later, Jian Yi
won another match resolutely. At this point, there's only the last two rounds
in this big outer school competition left. The last 4 people.
In these four people,
three of them performed exceptionally. Only one of them got lucky, didn't meet
any tough opponents at all, and managed to muddle through. They followed the
competition schedule and split into pairs for the semifinal. The guy that
managed to muddle through of course didn't land in Jian Yi's bracket.
"So he really has
to fight 8 hard battles." Some of the crowd that has been observing Jian
Yi this entire time started to stir restlessly.
"No, I've been
watching since yesterday. Ever since the 4th match yesterday, he never
encountered a weak opponent. This means he had to fight 10 hard battles!” As
the people chatted, they secretly observed Jizi Ang.
But Jizi Ang continued
to remain steadfast and focused, as if he didn't notice the increasing uproar
at all.
The bell rang and the
semifinals began. Just in the middle of this semifinal, Jian Yi's foot slipped.
He didn't manage to dodge properly and, unprecedented, received a big gash on
his face from his opponent.
"He's surely used
up too much energy!" "He didn't even have a chance to rest."
"This is unfair...... How is this fair?"
Some of the viewers
were inner disciples. Many of them started to feel outraged towards the
injustice that this well performing outer disciple was facing.
Some of them received
agreement from their fellow senior disciples. Others, however, were only
showered with scolding: "What's so unfair? Who can be blamed for his bad
luck?"
The difference in these
opinions naturally came from different divisions within the sect.
Nevertheless, there were
more and more people who sincerely wished that Jian Yi could win this match.
Carrying plenty of people's hope, Jian Yi finally obtained victory.
He stood in the middle
of the dueling stage and used a finger to wipe at the injury on his face.
Standing there for a long while, it looked like it took him quite a while to
recover again.
Unable to rest, the final match was about to start
immediately afterwards.
The final opponent just
crushed a weakling in his last match. It pretty much counted as a little rest
for him. At this moment, he was already standing on the stage for the final
match. Jian Yi, however, still remained standing below the stage, stalling for
a while.
"Jian shizhi, how
come you're not heading on stage?" An elder beside Jizi Ang urged:
"Don't tell me you plan to give up?"
Jian Yi smiled and then
shook his head: "I have no plan to forfeit."
He raised his head and
looked towards Jizi Ang: "I just have a few words I want to ask the Sect
Leader."
24
Chapter 24
Mumbling for a moment,
Jizi Ang originally planned to ignore Jian
Yi.
However, at this moment
Jian Yi was already the focus of everyone's attention. The crowd's gazes were
all converging on him. Hearing him say those words, the inner disciples who
came to watch the competition all turned their gazes to Jizi Ang.
Under this kind of
pressure, Jizi Ang had no choice but to ask: "What do you want to
say?"
Jian Yi smiled faintly:
"I only want to ask. Back then, you approved of making an exception and
allowing me into the inner school, right?"
This answer was of course 'yes.' If Jian Yi entered the
inner school without Jizi Ang's approval, then the issue wouldn't be one that
could be resolved with this competition before them.
"Since the Sect
Leader already agreed back then, then why must you retract your decision now.
Not to mention, to go so far as to set up this big competition?" Jian Yi
continued to ask.
"That's naturally
because......" Jizi Ang answered unhurriedly: "You must prove you
really do have the capability."
"Then have I
proved it?" Jian Yi asked in response.
Jizi Ang paused.
"Everyone." Jian Yi walked towards the
observation stands, faced the crowd and raised both hands: "Everyone has
been here observing the matches for two days. I've fought match after match
continuously. I believe everyone has seen my performance up to now. So I must
ask everyone present, do you think my strength is enough to enter the inner
school? Have I shown that I indeed have the qualifications?"
After these words were
said, there was another uproar in the stands.
At first, a lot of
people remained silent. But there's always that one very outspoken and
straightforward individual, who'd directly stand up and yell loudly:
"Yes!"
With someone taking the
lead, more voices of agreement instantly resounded one after the other.
"You have."
"Of course, you have." "If you didn't have the qualifications to
enter the inner school with this kind of skills, then half of the inner
disciples should be expelled." "Yes!"
Within seconds, a large
number of people voiced their support, acknowledging Jian Yi's strength. The
combination of all of these voices instantly created huge momentum.
Jian Yi gave a bow
towards the stand and gave thanks to these voices of support.
"I know that the
Sect Leader acted that way before because several Elders didn't believe I have
the qualification and suspected that I was only boasting. If this were true,
and they wanted to conduct this huge competition to uncover the truth and expel
such an egotistical and boastful person, I have nothing to say. But since I really
do have the strength and the qualification-- why do I have to waste all of this
energy and effort in order to 'prove' myself, tiring myself to death and
competing all of these matches?"
Jian Yi continued to
say: "Other people entered this big competition in order to fight me for
this position. But what am I in it? What do I gain from it? Why should I
participate? As a matter of fact, if I make the tiniest error and don't obtain
victory in the end, I even face expulsion from the Sect!"
Every one of Jian Yi's
remarks here were aggressive and overbearing, completely lacking any respect to
the Sect Leader.
The crowd could feel
the utter fury in his words. Some people furrowed their brows because of this
fury, believing that Jian Yi was being disrespectful of his elders and overly
fastidious. However, even more people sighed, clearly in agreement with these
remarks and felt very understanding of Jian Yi's anger.
"Sect Leader
shishu." Wen Xuan promptly turned around and cupped his hands, and
interrupted here: "Ever since Jian shidi heard he had to participate in
this competition, he's been preparing desperately everyday. How exhausting it
must be to fight all of these matches continuously, I don't think I even need
to mention this. But he originally didn't need to put in all of this work.
Everything was only because several Elders didn't believe in him, that's
all."
Even Jizi Ang's own
disciple, Zhang Xiaoqing, also wrinkled her nose to the side and grumbled in a
small voice: "He even has to show all of these people his real strength
for free."
Similar voices sounded amongst the crowd. Many people
were counting the damage he suffered for him.
Jian Yi smiled briefly
and then raised his voice to ask: "What do you think of this, Sect
Leader?"
Being backed into this
kind of position, Jizi Ang's face inevitably darkened for a brief moment. But
he thought very quickly and his complexion recovered.
He wasn't blind. He
also saw Jian Yi's performance up to this point. At the very least, he gained a
sense of appreciation for Jian Yi's talent, he just didn't like the other's
impudence. Therefore, at this moment in Jizi Ang's heart, the desire to
directly expel Jian Yi was no longer as strong. What he really wanted was to
knock Jian Yi down a few pegs and turn the other's temperament more malleable,
that's all.
Therefore, in facing
Jian Yi's fury, Jizi Ang felt a bit pleased. He believed that this anger
indicated that Jian Yi had no wish to
participate in the final match. That Jian Yi wasn't
confident in winning this last battle. That Jian Yi was weakening.
"You have decent
skills. However, because there are plenty of outer disciples, no matter how
strong you are, you still have to show it to convince the masses. Before I
thoughtlessly permitted you to enter the inner school, it was indeed my fault.
I didn't consider it properly." Jizi Ang said: "But since you have
decent skills, I can null the matter before regarding 'expelling you out of the
Sect if you didn't obtain victory. In the last match remaining, it doesn't
matter if you win or lose, even if you forfeit, you'll still be able to return
to the outer school to continue cultivating. You can still enter the inner Sect
when the end of the year exam comes. I can even promise to provide you with
extensive guidance."
Saying this, Jizi Ang
looked very expectantly at Jian Yi, as if he already laid out a huge favor and
was just waiting for Jian Yi to come accept it.
He really did gain an
interest in providing extensive guidance to Jian Yi. After all, Jian Yi wasn't
like Wen Xuan. If he could really be developed, he might even become a backbone
for the Sect in the future. Even though there's a small discord between them
currently, the days were long. What can't be fixed slowly over time?
But in face of this favor, Jian Yi only smiled and asked
in response: "And what if I win?"
Jizi Ang was stunned.
"There's no need to take back the penalty we agreed
on. If I really lose, then I accept the punishment." Jian Yi raised the
corner of his brows: "Right now I'm asking, if I won in the end, what do I
get?"
Still the same audacious impudence! Jizi Ang hated this
attitude of his. Immediately, Jizi Ang's face darkened. Just as he planned to
reply, he suddenly discovered that because of their previous conversation, in
response to Jian Yi's demand at this moment, he actually had no choice but to
give a proper answer.
Because those inner disciples watching in the stands were
all starting to nod their heads.
"That's right. If
there's punishment, then there should be reward."
"If other people
win, they can gain the qualification to enter the inner school. If he won, then
naturally, he should be able to gain something as well. It's not like you can
say he can also gain the qualification to enter the inner school? That's
already his right."
"I wonder what the
Sect Leader will give him as reward."
Jizi Ang can only ask
with a darkened face: "What do you want?"
Jian Yi smiled
slightly: "It's all up to you, Sect Leader."
All up to the Sect
Leader? Under the eyes of the crowd, would Jizi Ang dare to be stingy? The
words that Jian Yi said just now looked like he was backing off, but in
reality, they were even more demanding than directly asking for something
hefty.
Jizi Ang gave a cold
huff: "If you really obtained victory, then you can ask me for three
wishes anytime. As long as it's not excessive, I will help you achieve them.
What do you think of this reward?"
Jian Yi instantly smiled and quickly cupped his hands,
saying: "With everyone present as witnesses, I trust that the Sect Leader
will definitely abide by your promise."
Saying this, he finally
revealed a satisfied expression and walked over to the final stage. By this
time, his opponent was already feeling somewhat awkward after waiting all this
time.
Jizi Ang watched with
an indifferent eye, but in his heart, he really didn't believe Jian Yi could
win another round.
Afterall, this opponent
for the final match was at an even higher level in strength than those that
Jian Yi beat previously. The flying sword in his hand looked very exquisite. If
it weren't for the fact that he joined the Sect at an inopportune time and
didn't catch the last end of the year exam, he would have been able to join the
inner sect a long time ago.
As soon as the starting
bell for the final match sounded, this person waved his sword precisely and
started attacking Jian Yi swiftly. Jian Yi could only hastily evade to the
side.
Jizi Ang looked at Jian
Yi's figure fleeing in disarray, and already started deliberating over whether
or not he should keep Jian Yi after he lost. If he were to keep this disciple,
what method should he use to save him. If he didn't keep the other, how was he
going to prevent Jian Yi from joining some other sect.
But he never imagined,
although Jian Yi looked like he was randomly dodging, he actually evaded just
right to completely avoid all of his opponent's attacks successfully.
Then Jian Yi abruptly
pulled out his sword as well. His movement was even faster than what he had
displayed in the previous matches.
In all of his 8 matches,
for the first time, he didn't lay down any traps and started facing off against
his opponent head on, really meeting force with force!
The crowd was in
uproar.
Seeing this, all of the
viewers all became excited. Many even stood up to get a closer look.
Jian Yi has been saving his strength all this time, just
for this last match.
Clang, clang, clang,
the two swords continuously struck each other, making sharp, clear sounds
unceasingly.
The two people's
performance wasn't actually identical. The opponent has clearly been
cultivating the sword path for quite a while. When he waved his sword, it was
continuous and fluid, one move following the other, sharp yet beautiful. As for
Jian Yi's sword skills...... Alright. It really can't be called sword skills at
all. He was only waving the sword very quickly. It was actually extremely
chaotic, without any rhyme or reason, hard to describe
But as he swung the
sword chaotically, Jian Yi also constantly shifted and turned his positioning,
making the sword in his hand look even more blurry to the viewers. Again and
again, he accurately avoided the other's attack. Again and again, he managed to
thread the tip of his sword over in the most crafty angles. Every single one of
his movements was extraordinarily precise.
His opponent this time
wasn't a pushover either. His sword arts were really very refined, so he
received Jian Yi's every move unwaveringly. For a moment, they were equally
matched.
However, just as the
crowd thought they'd continue to remain deadlocked, Jian Yi's opponent took a
step back and suddenly disappeared.
This kind of small
scale invisibility skill was actually not easily casted by qi refining
disciples. More often, it's the effect of some magic tool. For this move to
suddenly be used in the middle of an intense battle, the crowd instantly took
in a cold breath for Jian
Yi.
How was he supposed to
deal with this present situation?
Then, they watched as
Jian Yi abruptly took a step to the side and swung his sword. Instantly, there
was the sound of swords clashing again. This slight repositioning and attack he
did effortlessly, as if he were taking a casual stroll.
Just as the swords
clashed, his opponent's figure and surprised expression slowly appeared under
Jian Yi's blade.
Not only was this
person surprised. The entire crowd was also surprised.
Although the opponent
reflexively blocked Jian Yi's first move just now, his moment of surprise was
fatal. Jian Yi didn't even wait until the other to become completely visible
before following up with a second swing of his sword. This time, his opponent
reacted too late. Instantly a white light lit up and transported that person
outside of the stage.
At this moment in time,
the crowd still didn't recover from the shock of seeing Jian Yi break his
opponent's invisibility skill.
"Again......"
"His opponent got
forcibly transported out of the stage again."
"He won
again!" "What the heck happened?"
In this clamorous
noise, several Elders even stood up, carrying similar looks of astonishment. Of
course, they knew plenty of ways to figure out the location of an invisible
attacker, but all of those methods weren't something a qi refining cultivator
could use. Perhaps it's also the effect of some magic tool? The crowd can only
think this.
Only the few Elders who
passed the golden core stage felt an even deeper sense of shock. Although they
didn't reveal anything on their faces, their cultivations were higher so they
could naturally see more. They didn't ponder about how Jian Yi managed to see
through the invisibility skill, because the answer to that question was
actually rather insignificant. On the contrary, they observed an even more
terrifying fact-- Jian Yi's movements
were always one step
faster than his opponent, as if he could foresee the other's next move,
regardless of whether he could physically see it or not.
This perhaps was
because of a certain ability, a certain magic skill, or perhaps it's because of
a certain innate talent, because he was a person blessed by the heavens. No
matter what it was, it was terrifying and formidable enough to acknowledge him
as a rare genius and someone with boundless potential.
After a moment of confusion and shock, finally someone
recovered enough and started to cheer loudly for Jian Yi for his victory.
"Jian Yi! Jian
Yi!" "Too powerful! Jian shidi!" "The inner sect welcomes
you!"
Still standing on the
dueling stage, Jian Yi listened to the cheers and congratulations, and secretly
put away the round jade tool that was held in his left hand.

Chapter 25
Among this ocean of
cheers and applause, Wen Xuan slightly furrowed his brows.
"Wen shixiong,
congratulations." Just at this moment, a voice came from his side. It was
Zhang Xiaoqing. She knew that Jian Yi and Wen Xuan were close so she
specifically squeezed over to Wen Xuan's side to give him this congratulation.
She even completely ignored the displeased gaze of her own Sect Leader shifu
who was behind her.
Wen Xuan gave this shimei
a friendly smile. He was just about to speak when he suddenly heard a wave of
alarmed cries.
Turning his head, he saw
Jian Yi's both knees give out as the other directly fell over unconscious on
the stage.
"Not good!"
Zhang Xiaoqing also gave an alarmed yell. She turned her head again and was
just about to say something. However, Wen Xuan already went charging over.
In that instant, Zhang
Xianqing actually felt a faint sense of loss.
Jumping directly down
from the stand, Wen Xuan rushed over to Jian Yi's side in one breath:
"Jian shidi!"
At this moment, Jian Yi
had both eyes closed tightly, his face white as paper. Although he still had a
tiny bit of awareness, he didn't have any energy left at all.
The crowd all thought
that Jian Yi was too exhausted. Only Wen Xuan knew about Jian Yi's ability to
read the Will of Heaven, and has seen how Jian Yi looked after he used such a
skill.
He instantly couldn't be bothered with anything and pulled
Jian Yi into his arms.
Although it was right in
the public view of many, with Jian Yi's current state, no one thought much
about Wen Xuan's actions.
"Sect Leader shishu,
Elders, apologies." Wen Xuan said in a raised voice: "Jian shidi
really consumed too much energy during this competition. Please let me bring
him back to rest first."
Saying this, he didn't
forget to add: "As for the reward that Jian shidi won during this victory,
of course he will come discuss it carefully with Sect Leader shishu after he
recovers."
Jizi Ang's face was
instantly as black as the bottom of a wok. However, because he couldn't show
fury in front of the crowd, he could only wave his hand and let the two leave
first.
Zhang Xiaoqing came over
to the two with a smile: "Wen shixiong, let me go together with you guys.
Maybe I can lend a hand."
She was the disciple most
proficient in healing and replenishing spiritual energy in the Water Cloud
Sect, so naturally, she'd be very helpful. Not to mention, she always had a
pretty good relationship with Wen Xuan. The things that her shifu did couldn't
be blamed on her anyways. Wen Xuan swiftly nodded his head and gave thanks.
"What's there to
thank? We're fellow disciples. No need to be courteous." Zhang Xiaoqing
walked up next to the two. Then she was instantly startled.
Because she saw Jian Yi
had opened his eyes where he laid in Wen Xuan's arms, clearly having recovered
slightly already. It's just Jian Yi didn't move yet, and remained nestling
quietly and adorably against Wen Xuan's chest. His cheeks were completely red
and his eyes darted around, carrying a sense of bashfulness like he didn't know
where to rest his gaze.
"Zhang shimei?"
Wen Xuan noticed the subtle change in Zhang Xiaoqing's expression: "What's
the matter?"
Zhang Xiaoqing saw Wen
Xuan's honest face and proper expression. For a moment, she felt extremely
conflicted inside her heart, unable to squeeze out an answer for quite awhile.
Wen Xuan didn't continue
to bother with her. He rushed like he was on fire and carried Jian Yi back to
his abode in Daiyun Peak. As soon as he entered the door, he placed Jian Yi on
the bed. After Zhang Qiaoqing came over and treated him slightly, then
used magic to help him
replenish his spiritual energy, Jian Yi closed his eyes and fell into deep
sleep.
But even falling asleep
like this, he still grabbed onto Wen Xuan's sleeve, not letting Wen Xuan leave.
"Wen shixiong,"
Zhang Xiaoqing finally couldn't hold back: "Don't you think Jian shidi
treats you...too..."
She only asked half way,
when Jian Yi who was supposed to be sleeping, suddenly opened his eyes again
and stared directly at her.
Unsurprisingly, this gaze
was unfriendly, full of exclusion, rejection, dismissal, like a wild beast
glowering at an unwelcome guest in its territory. Even if she came over
specifically to heal him, Jian Yi didn't seem to welcome her even one bit.
The rest of Zhang
Xiaoqing's words were snuffed out just like this.
"Jian shidi is
somewhat sticky." Wen Xuan still managed to guess her meaning, but said
with an unconcerned smile: "But that shouldn't be a problem. We're fellow
disciples in the same Sect. Nothing wrong with finding a companion."
No no no. That's a huge
problem. Zhang Xiaoqing couldn't help but deliberate a bit more. But under the
gaze from Jian Yi, she really felt too awkward to say anything more. Even just
sitting here made Zhang Xiaoqing feel like something was stabbing her in the
back, like she was sitting on pins and needles. In the end, she could only
hastily say her goodbyes.
Because Jian Yi still
held his sleeve, Wen Xuan couldn't even get up and send her off.
After Zhang Xiaoqing left
rather gloomily, Wen Xuan turned his head back and looked at Jian Yi who
immediately closed his eyes and started pretending to be asleep. He couldn't
help but shake his head and smile: "What, did Zhang shimei offend you
somehow as well? Or...... is there something wrong with her?"
Jian Yi still had his
eyes closed tightly, still feigning sleep.
Wen Xuan curled his
fingers and mercilessly flicked him on the forehead.
Jian Yi covered his
forehead and whined in pain for a bit before unwillingly opening his eyes
again. He said with a grimace: "There's nothing wrong with her, I just
don't like seeing her."
"Oh you." Wen
Xuan said exasperatedly.
Then, Wen Xuan put on a
proper expression and said with furrowed brows: "You were acting
recklessly again today.”
Jian Yi instantly shrank
into the bed.
Wen Xuan was just saying
this, but his words didn't hold any criticism. What's there to criticize. Since
it was Jian Yi's own ability, then it's up to him to decide when and how to use
it. Wen Xuan can only softly rub Jian Yi on the head, his gaze gentle with a
slight concern: "You should be more careful with your own body."
"Shixiong, don't
worry." Jian Yi took that hand of his and squeezed it: "I know my
limits."
Saying this, he even
smiled smugly: "Not to mention, although this time I consumed a lot of
energy, compared to what I earned, it's completely worth it."
Wen Xuan recalled the things Jian Yi gained this time. His
eyes also lit up.
First, Jian Yi displayed
his skills in front of the crowd and successfully built up his reputation. If
they peeked their heads outside and listened now, the mountains still echoed
with praises for Jian Yi's outstanding skills. It can be inferred that these
praises will travel further and wide, growing louder over time. This was a
huge, formless type of treasure. Even if Jian Yi and Wen Xuan were about to
temporarily leave the Water Cloud Sect together soon, this formless treasure
can bring him benefits.
Second, the Sect Leader,
Jizi Ang, promised Jian Yi three requests.
"Have you decided on
what to ask the Sect Leader?" Wen Xuan said: "Be careful. Don't give
him the chance to screw you over in the process."
Jian Yi smiled, clearly
having a plan in his heart.
He rested at Wen Xuan's
place for most of the day. The next morning, he was back to being the usually
high spirited, healthy and active Jian shidi. To avoid trouble arising from
delaying too long, he went immediately to see the Sect Leader at the inner
sect's big hall in order
to discuss his reward for winning the big outer school competition.
Although Jizi Ang's face
was unsightly, it was still something he promised in front of the crowd.
Therefore, he couldn't avoid it: "What are the three things you want?
You're prepared to ask them now, right?"
Jian Yi smiled faintly
and very quickly made his first request, a request that Jizi Ang definitely
couldn't twist at all.
When Jizi Ang heard, his
expression changed subtly: "You want... spiritual stones?"
Jian Yi nodded his head
seriously: "Shixiong and I are about to travel outside. It's better to
have more money prepared for our journey."
There was nothing wrong
with this logic, but to have this kind of opportunity, yet only ask for
spiritual stones, instead of magic tools or skill manuals, it's really a
bit...... Jizi Ang was just about to think 'wasteful' when he heard Jian Yi
add.
"I only want 10
thousand spiritual stones."
Jizi Ang's face instantly
twitched. Alright, looks like this really wasn't a kid who'd lose out in the
end. Ten thousand spiritual stones? Even though it's only enough to buy a top
quality yuan gathering magic tool, it can buy over a dozen qi refining level
magic tools with plenty to spare.
In the end, it was only
spiritual stones. Jizi Ang wasn't that stingy so he waved his hand. A jade card
flew into Jian Yi's hand: "You
can take this and go
retrieve it from the sect's storage room yourself."
Jian Yi took the jade
card and flipped it back and forth several times before smiling with
satisfaction.
However, when it was time
for him to say his second request, he paused for a long time.
So long that Jizi Ang
practically wanted to urge him to hurry up. Finally, Jian Yi raised his head:
"This second request...... Can the Sect Leader answer a few questions from
me?"
A few? Jizi Ang thought
mockingly: "Why don't you ask if I can give you a few more requests as
well?"
"It's only a few
questions. It won't cost the Sect Leader too much energy." Jian Yi
persisted.
Furrowing his brows, Jizi
Ang waved his hand. His face was still full of unwillingness: "Fine, ask
away."
"First, in the
ancient mausoleum that shixiong and I discovered before, there should have been
a cultivation method for a top quality water root user." Jian Yi asked:
"Can the Sect Leader tell me, who has this cultivation method right now?"
When Jizi Ang heard these
words, he was first startled. Then, he looked at Jian Yi profoundly: "Top
quality water root...... Wen shizhi even told you about this?"
Jian Yi's eyes flashed,
but he didn't answer.
"But I don't know
anything about the cultivation method you're talking about." Jizi Ang
furrowed his brows: "You, and Wen shizi as well, I really don't understand
you guys. Why must both of you insist there's a cultivation method in there?
Even if I tell you it's not there at all, you make it sound like I'm lying to
you guys or something."
Jian Yi lowered his head
and smiled. This request was just like this. Even if Jizi Ang answered him, it
definitely wasn't the truth.
Good thing he persisted
on asking 'a few' questions. It's not a big deal if one of the questions was
wasted.
"Then can the Sect
Leader please look at these things." Jian Yi said and then handed over a
list of spiritual materials: "The reason why shixiong and I are traveling
is to find these things. Some of the items we have an idea of where to find
them, but the others remain completely at a loss. Perhaps the Sect Leader knows
where to find them? Please bestow us some knowledge."
Jizi Ang picked up the
list and looked. His expression instantly turned strange: "These... are
materials needed to form yuan?"
"For
shixiong." Jian Yi said.
Jizi Ang lifted his head,
his expression still carrying an odd expression.
"A few days ago,
Daoist Master Chu already gave shixiong a cultivation method." Jian Yi
explained.
"What? Chu shixiong
actually......" Jizi Ang furrowed his brows, then examined the youth
before him. He couldn't hold back from scoffing: "Isn't it all because of
the fine things you've done."
Then Jizi Ang couldn't
help but sigh: "Alright. It doesn't matter, since Chu shixiong changed his
mind, then I also have no need to act the villain."
Saying this, he fetched
paper and brush and promptly started to write down things while looking at the
list.
After a long while, Jizi
Ang finally returned this piece of paper that was filled with tightly packed
words back to Jian Yi. Jian Yi looked. A lot of the listed items already had
annotations. There were still a few that were blank afterwards. Who knows if
it's because Jizi Ang didn't know himself or because he was unwilling to say.
In any case, the number could be counted with one hand. So in the end, Jizi Ang
really saved them a whole lot of effort here.
"Thank you, Sect
Leader." Jian Yi said this fairly sincerely.
Jizi Ang looked at him
coldly: "You're rather loyal and devoted to Wen shizhi. Such a rare
opportunity, yet you'd actually waste a request on him."
Hearing these words, Jian
Yi's expression didn't change, as if he was listening to wasted breath.
"You wholeheartedly
wish he could go further." Jizi Ang asked with furrowed brows: "Are
you under the impression... that you're doing a good thing?"
Jian Yi gave a faint
smile: "I'm very clear what I'm doing. No need for the Sect Leader to
worry."
"I know that Wen
shizhi is well versed at winning people's hearts. Half of the disciples in this
Water Cloud Sect are all willing to defend him. Especially you. All you know is
to follow around behind him all day. But with your skills, you could take the
lead yourself." Jizi Ang was still not resigned and attempted to persuade
Jian Yi: "Why must you follow behind him? One day in the future... one day
in the future you will discover that the two of you don't travel the same road.
Instead of regretting then, you might as well......"
"No need for the
Sect Leader to worry." Jian Yi repeated his words earlier, resolutely
cutting off Jizi Ang's nagging.
The polite attitude that
he feigned already receded, leaving behind an entire person who's tone even
turned incomparably sharp: "One day in the future, he will eventually
learn that no one is on the same road with him, except me who will always be
standing behind him."
Jizi Ang laughed
mockingly: "Commendable spirit."
Then he bypassed this
topic that made both of them unhappy and settled on waiting for Jian Yi's last
request.
However, waiting left and
right, Jian Yi remained pondering forever. In the end, he still didn't say
anything, looking like he was still hesitating on how to use this last
opportunity.
Jizi Ang felt this wait
was practically torture. At the moment, his biggest wish was that Jian Yi could
hurry up and make all three
requests. That way he
could deal with them swiftly and not owe anything. What worried him the most
was if Jian Yi said something like 'I haven't thought of it yet. I'll request
it when the time comes." and drag this request endlessly onward, until
Jian Yi's cultivation rose higher and higher, until one day in the future when
he threw out a request that'd require Jizi Ang to pay a huge price to complete.
"Don't tell me
you're going to use the last request on Wen shizhi again, right?" Jizi Ang
said with a smile: "There's no need. You should worry about yourself
more."
Jian Yi furrowed his
brows, thinking this was another attempt at instigation.
However, right now Jizi
Ang only wanted to guild Jian Yi into making his last request quicker. Jizi Ang
continued to say: "Actually, after you won the competition yesterday, I
investigated your background slightly."
Startled, Jian Yi
abruptly raised his head and met Jizi Ang's eyes.
"Your father was
murdered. Your family business was usurped." Jizi Ang thought this
reaction meant Jian Yi was emotionally affected. Instantly, he chuckled and
continued to ask: "Don't you want to get revenge?"
Jian Yi didn't respond
for a while.
Jizi Ang thought he was
wavering, but actually Jian Yi was only confused.
Of course, when Jian Yi
first transmigrated over, he managed to somewhat read the original's memories
from his corpse. But the original was a dimwit so his memories were disjointed,
vague, and confusing. Therefore, Jian Yi knew somewhat about his identity and
background. The other stuff he only knew vaguely through guessing.
--That cheap father who
he hasn't seen since he transmigrated over, so he was actually murdered? How
unfortunate for the original. Even when he died in the forest, he didn't know
this truth.
At this moment, Jian Yi
actually wavered slightly. He took over the original's body. At first he
thought the original's parents died without regret, so he didn't really think
too much about it and only focused on his own objectives. But now that he
learned the original actually received this kind of huge injustice, as the
person who took over the original's body, there's no way Jian Yi can just leave
it be
However, after wavering
for a moment, Jian Yi steadied his heart again.
Of course he needed to
deal with the injustice the original experienced, but this personal issue
should still be placed behind Wen Xuan's matters.
"Naturally I will
get my revenge." Jian Yi finally said slowly: "But I don't need the
Sect Leader's help here. One day in the future, I will deal with it
myself."
"Then this 3rd
request, what exactly do you......"
Jian Yi cupped his
hands and said resolutely: "Please let Elder Qi become my shifu."
26
Chapter 26
"Elder Qi? Qi
Jibai?" Jizi Ang was briefly stunned. Then his brows couldn't help but
furrow: Why did it have to be him?
If it was before, it
wouldn't matter who Jian Yi took as his shifu. Qi Jibai wasn't picky with who
he accepted as a disciple either. This request would have been fulfilled
easily. But now that Jian Yi's skills and capability was exposed, he was like
an excavated mountain of treasure. Who knows how many Elders were staring at
him eagerly.
In fact, just before
Jian Yi arrived today. Jizi Ang already received several impatient beseeches from
Elders that loved talent. He was just deliberating which Elder he should give
to Jian Yi to in order to gain the most benefit.
Now look. Jian Yi
actually used one of his requests to choose a shifu for himself, and it just
had to be Qi Jibai.
Ever since Qi Jibai was
betrayed by the Danxin Sect and came to the Water Cloud Sect, he's been the
most well-behaved, yet most self-conservative person, determined to take no
side, having no loyalty or devotion to Jizi Ang, this Sect Leader, at all. If
he gave Jian Yi to this person, Jizi Ang definitely wouldn't be able to gain
anything out of it.
Even without this
little selfish desire, it'd be quite a pity to give Jian Yi to Qi Jibai.
"Elder Qi has been
working very diligently in the alchemy school the last few years. I respect him
very deeply." Jizi Ang attempted to persuade Jian Yi: "But you should
know. His cultivation foundation has been injured prior. It's hard for him to
advance further. There's only these 10-20 years of life left for him. If he
became your shifu, how much help can he offer to your cultivation and skills?
Why don't you consider Elder Cheng or Elder Zhao. They both have the potential
to form golden cores in the next ten years. Even my Ling shimei....."
Jian Yi waited for him
to finish saying this whole bunch, then replied with a smile: "But this
disciple prefers Elder Qi."
The corner of Jizi Ang's eyes twitched, but he
persevered: "Even if you don't want to consider Elder Cheng and Zhao, my
Ling shimei already formed a golden core for over ten years. She's never taken
a disciple before but actually showed interest in you. If you accept her as
your shifu, you'd be the head disciple of a golden core cultivator. Isn't that
100 times better than Qi Jibai?"
"But this disciple
still prefers Elder Qi." Jian Yi was resolute.
"You......"
Jizi Ang's entire face started to twist.
"As for why this
disciple prefers Elder Qi, you don't need to ask, Sect Leader." Jian Yi
continued to say: "This is my 3rd request. I've already said it as clearly
as possible. Don't tell me, Sect Leader plans to renege?"
Jizi Ang huffed coldly,
so angry that he tugged at the beard on his chin, secretly saying to himself:
really don't know what's good for you.
But since things have
already reached this point, Jizi Ang can only say: "It still depends on if
Qi Jibai is willing or not."
"Many thanks, Sect Leader." Jian Yi cupped his
hands again and smiled extremely pleased with himself.
As long as the sect Leader was willing to concede then
this matter was practically decided. As for whether or not Qi Jibai was willing
to accept Jian Yi as his disciple, does that even need worrying?
However, after Jian Yi
ran off eagerly to the alchemy school and gave Qi Jibai a big courteous bow,
then respectfully explained his reason for coming, Qi Jibai only gave him a
cool glance in return: "Why would I accept you?"
Jian Yi's wide grin
instantly froze.
"You think I don't
know? You already plan to leave the Sect temporarily with your Wen shixiong.
Maybe you won't even be back for a few years?" Qi Jibai smoothed out his
clean, white sleeves leisurely, then lightly flicked the corner of his sleeve,
shaking off the nonexistent dust on it: "Asking me to become
your shifu at this
moment, you probably didn't plan to learn anything from me at all, right?"
Saying this, he looked
up: "Coincidentally, I also don't have anything to teach you."
After feeling
momentarily awkward, Jian Yi finally understood. After experiencing what he
went through, this Elder Qi inevitably gained incomparably sharp and keen
vision and insight. He could discern easily whether Jian Yi sincerely wanted to
become his disciple or had other motives.
Thinking deeply some
more, Jian Yi decisively kneeled on the floor. He gave three kowtows in
succession to make up for his lack of sincerity: "Shifu, at this moment,
inside the Water Cloud Sect, your place is the most suitable for this
disciple."
"How thick
skinned." Qi Jibai's lips hooked into a smile.
Although he presented
that kind of attitude, he still felt rather pleased at hearing Jian Yi say
'shifu.'
Before when he accepted
disciples, as long as they were willing, he'd accept without question. He was
very indifferent, never picky about anything. For him to give Jian Yi a bit of
trouble at the moment, it's because Jian Yi was the only person who managed to
interest him.
"But for you to study under me," Qi Jibai
pressed his lips together: "To be honest -- it's rather wasteful."
"Shifu. No matter
what, this disciple plans to stay here. If you're willing to accept me, then
accept me. If you're unwilling to
accept, then this
disciple will just kneel here forever." Without any better options, Jian
Yi directly started to act obstinate: "Don't plan to persuade me. Before
the Sect Leader even brought out Elder Ling to try to convince me to change my
decision, I still didn't agree."
"Ling
xianzi?" Qi Jibai was startled.
He gave Jian Yi a
profound look. Jian Yi met his gaze head on.
"Forget it, forget
it." After a while, Qi Jibai shook his head exasperatedly: "I really
don't get what you're plotting."
"Shifu, are you
consenting?" Instantly Jian Yi became happy and hopped up.
"Yes yes." Qi
Jibai laughed at himself: "In any case, I've already accepted all those
ridiculous ones that came before you. So why can't I accept you? As long as you
don't regret it yourself later."
"This disciple
definitely won't regret it." Jian Yi happily scooted to his side:
"Shifu, you don't know. I was only able to come ask you to be my teacher
because I used one of the three requests that the Sect Leader promised me. Or
else that Sect Leader might not have let me off so easily. I did so much, yet
you actually suspected this disciple's sincerity, Shifu. This disciple is so
hurt!"
"Now I'm the one
who accused you wrongly?" Qi Jibai gave him a side glance.
Jian Yi didn't answer
this question and continued to say with a cheeky grin: "Since this
disciple had such a difficult time being
accepted as your
student, Shifu, don't you think you should give me a present?"
When Qi Jibai heard, he
really did feel inclined to agree. After all, although he accepted many
disciples, this was the only student he felt interested in. So there's no way
he can treat the other inadequately.
However, if they must
talk about property and possession, even though he's been an Elder for all of
these years, it's been a long time since he spent effort gathering magic tools
and stuff. His possessions, at the moment, might not even compare to what Wen
Xuan had stored away. All he had were some spiritual stones and medicinal pills.
He's already seen Wen
Xuan's generosity towards Jian Yi. Now that he, as the shifu, needed to bestow
a gift upon his disciple, it's only proper if he was even more generous. But
spiritual stones and medicinal pills really were too embarrassing to pull out--
deliberating back and forth, Qi Jibai could only think of one thing to give.
Thinking this, Qi Jibai
picked up the folding fan next to his hand and ruthlessly rapped Jian Yi on the
head with it: "I was just saying, what were you plotting? So you're actually
waiting here for me! Very nice, you brat. How did you know I had this
thing?"
Covering his head, Jian
Yi laughed deviously. Not even disguising his obvious scheming as he even
continued to say shamelessly: "Not just that. This disciple actually still
has one more request."
Qi Jibai was left
speechless: "Speak."
Jian Yi opened his
mouth, but he stopped himself and first looked extremely cautiously outside.
Then, he leaned close next to Qi Jibai's ear and whispered: "This disciple
heard, back then, before Daoist Master Ye arrived on the North Ning continent,
he once stayed in the Danxin Sect as a guest for two years."
Daoist Master Ye? In his moment of surprise, Qi Jibai
also turned his gaze outside the window and looked towards the direction of Daiyun
Peak.
"This disciple
wants to hear a bit more about this Daoist Master Ye and things related to
him." Jian Yi lowered his voice some more, like a thief or something.
Qi Jibai got up and
carefully added several barriers outside of the room.
"If the person you
want to ask about is Ye ShengGe, actually, when he stayed in Danxin Sect as a
guest all those years ago, I had the fortune of meeting him a few times. We
even chatted and I owe him quite a bit for his guidance." Then, he slowly
said: "However, it's been almost a hundred years since. Things remain the
same, but the people have changed."
Back then, Ye Sheng Ge
hadn't arrived in the North Ning continent yet, hadn't met Chu Lian yet.
Meanwhile, Qi Jibai was only a young disciple that just entered the Danxin
Sect.
"Speaking of this Daoist Master Ye. He actually
wasn't born from a sect in Central Sheng or North Ning. He also has nothing to
do with West Ming and South Feng. But rather, he came from......" Qi Jibai
looked at Jian Yi: "Have you heard of a place called 'The Little Valley'?
Jian Yi nodded.
He naturally knew about
The Little Valley. He also knew that Ye Sheng Ge was born in The Little Valley.
But where exactly is this Little Valley, the original writing described it
mysteriously and vaguely. Even after he finished reading the entire novel, he
still didn't know the details. And the reason why he was inquiring about Ye
Sheng Ge was just to find the location of this mysterious place.
"This teacher also
only knows a smattering." Qi Jibai said.
Jian Yi hastily
listened with respectful attention.
Just as Jian Yi and Qi
Jibai closed the door and started chatting, Wen Xuan already had his things
ready and packed in his room, just waiting for Jian Yi to come back so they
could head out.
At this moment, many of
the shidis and shimeis he had friendly relationships with all came over to bid
him farewell.
Zhang Xiaoqing and Shi
Buhui were naturally present. What's worth mentioning was that, today, Luo
Qingquan also came.
In mentioning Luo
Qingquan, one has to talk about how last time, he almost cried at the scene
after losing to Wen Xuan. It was only with Zhang Xiaoqing's thoughtful and
considerate consoling that he managed to hold it in. Then it was with Zhang
Xiaoqing's encouragement that he unhesitatingly decided to cultivate behind
closed doors, and vowed to make up for his loss as soon as possible. After
cultivating behind closed doors for all these days, he finally felt that his
strength made huge improvements.
Immediately after
coming out, he made a beeline for Wen Xuan. He even had a letter of challenge
in his hand.
Therefore, as soon as
Luo Qingquan saw Wen Xuan, his eyeballs almost fell out from staring too hard:
"What happened? What happened? How did you become foundation
building!"
Wen Xuan couldn't help
but give him a sideways look: Aren't you a little too behind on your news
update?
Zhang Xiaoqing gave Luo
Qingquan a light kick and said in a low voice: "What the heck are you
yelling randomly about? Stop talking about a sore topic."
Luo Qingquan took quite
the effort to recover from his shock. When he heard her say these words, he
looked towards Wen Xuan. As expected the other was still extremely annoying to
him.
Filled with this loathing, he squeezed the letter of
challenge in his hand, really wanting to whip it out and slap Wen Xuan in the
face with it. But clearly, he couldn't do something like that. In this instant,
he felt that Wen Xuan was really too devious. How could Wen Xuan win against
him and then just become foundation building? How was he supposed to beat him
back like this?
Filled with discontent
and unwillingness, Luo Qingquan finally pulled out something else and stuffed
it furiously in Wen Xuan's hand.
Wen Xuan looked. It was
a bottle of medicinal pill, one of the best pills for strengthening one's
foundation and forming Yuan.
"When you return to yuan gathering, I'll come
humiliate you again." After giving away this medicinal pill, Luo Qingquan
laid down these vicious words. Then, with a cold huff, he threw his sleeve and
left without looking back.
Such an attitude, Wen
Xuan didn't know whether to thank the other or not. He also didn't know if he
should laugh or cry.
"That guy is
completely hopeless." Zhang Xiaoqing also sighed.
After Luo Qingquan
left, Zhang Xiaoqing saw Jian Yi wasn't present so she sent Shi Buhui away as
well. Then, she said cautiously to Wen Xuan: "Wen shixiong, there's
something I've been thinking about repeatedly. I still think I should mention
it to you."
"What?" Wen
Xuan saw the subtle expression on her face, then thought for a moment before
inevitably smiling: "Is it related to Jian shidi?"
"Shixiong,"
Zhang Xiaoqing said: "he treats you so, so...you really don't think
there's anything wrong with it?"
"What's wrong with it?" Wen Xuan furrowed his
brows.
"You guys don't
even know each other for long, must you guys be this intimate?" Zhang
Xiaoqing couldn't help but take two steps closer and say anxiously: "I'm
afraid he has other thoughts in mind for you."
As soon as he heard
these words, Wen Xuan reflexively felt this was another attempt to sow discord
between their relationship. Instantly, his complexion turned unsightly:
"Zhang shimei,
although I don't know Jian shidi for long, according to
him, he admired me since he was young. If he wants to be more intimate with me,
that's normal. Not to mention, he's always treated me very well. How could I
suspect him without reason? Just because he's too sticky? Zhang shimei, to my
knowledge, there's plenty of shidis who want to cling to you as well, even
worse than my situation."
Zhang Xiaoqing sighed
exasperatedly: "How can that compare? Those shidi......"
Speaking to here, her
expression changed subtly again.
"Although those
shidis cling to me, they don't treatment with admiration, but rather with
adoration." Then Zhang Xiaoqing stated with a smile that's not quite a
smile: "Shixiong, you used them as examples. Perhaps you already
discovered? That Jian shidi towards you, might not merely be admiration."
Wen Xuan's words
abruptly sputtered. Just now, he only retorted reflexively. He didn't even
think in that direction at all.
"But....."
Wen Xuan wanted to say something more, but he suddenly lifted his head and
looked outward. He saw Jian Yi had returned and was just walking through the
door.
Jian Yi perceived his
gaze and met his eyes. Instantly, the youth narrowed his eyes and gave a
pleasant looking smile.
This smile was like a
flower encountering the sunlight, all of the sudden blossoming and revealing an
extraordinary splendor.
Wen Xuan looked at this
smile and, for the first time, felt somewhat stunned.
"Since Jian shidi
is back, it's time for me to say farewell.” Zhang Xiaoqing didn't want to butt
heads with Jian Yi. So she hastily went out, grabbed Shi Buhui and swiftly left
together with him.
Meanwhile, Wen Xuan
didn't even notice she had left. He was still looking at Jian Yi's smile, the
words rolling around relentlessly in his heart.
It's not
admiration...... but rather adoration?
It's just a few letters difference, but the meaning was
separated by a heavenly gulf. It pioneered a new direction that Wen Xuan never
considered before.

Chapter 27
"Shixiong, we reaped
some huge benefits today." Beaming with a smile, Jian Yi walked next to
Wen Xuan: "The Sect Leader gave us a pile of spiritual stones and gave us
plenty of pointers towards the whereabouts of those materials you need. Then, I
managed to get accepted as Elder Qi's disciple. Elder Qi was really generous to
me and gifted me something really nice."
Even after he finished
saying all these words, Wen Xuan continued to look at him dumbfoundedly. All
the way until Jian Yi noticed that the other's gaze was strange and couldn't
resist touching his own face: "What's the matter?"
Wen Xuan finally returned
from his thoughts and hastily withdrew his line of sight: "Nothing."
But those words still
echoed in his heart. He couldn't help thinking in that direction, and then
repeatedly berated himself. It was just a remark from Zhang Xiaoqing, why
should he believe it
so easily? Not to mention
he was a man. Jian shidi was also a man. Was it even possible for this kind of
situation to happen between a man and another man?
This was really a whole
new world to Wen Xuan, one that made his thoughts scatter completely in
disarray, not knowing how to make sense of it.
He considered directly
asking Jian Yi, yet felt this topic was really awkward. In the end, he couldn't
get the question out of his mouth.
Fortunately, although
traveling preparations were a bit tedious, after Jian Yi returned, they still
had to do some last minute tidying up. The two people got busy so Wen Xuan
didn't have any time to continue pondering over this distracting thought.
Before, Jian Yi already
went to collect the resources he gained as a new inner disciple. It was only
about a few hundred spiritual stones, as well as a qi refining magic tool.
While they can't be counted as super useful, it's better than nothing in the
end.
Meanwhile, Wen Xuan also
took out all of the savings he's stored all of these years in the Water Cloud
Sect. The size of this asset was not small, a total of 30 thousand Sect
contribution points. After trading them for all of the yuan gathering materials
that could be found in the sect, there were still 10 thousand points left. Wen
Xuan traded the rest into spiritual stones, medicinal pills, talismans, and
some commonly used materials and related stuff, in addition to a high quality
flying sword.
Wen Xuan spent quite some
time picking and choosing before finally deciding on this flying sword. No need
to talk about the
sharpness of the blade,
the body of the sword was also lithe and graceful. Using it was like using an
extension of his arm. It was exceptionally easy to handle, perfect for a
foundation building cultivator.
Jian Yi originally thought Wen Xuan got the sword for his
personal use.
However, after the two
people completely left the territory of the Water Cloud Sect and reached a
mountain ridge, Wen Xuan placed the sword in Jian Yi's hands.
"Didn't you say
you're almost at foundation building?" Wen Xuan said: "I got prepared
just in case. It'll save us the time to search for one when the time comes. We
might not even be able to find one with this quality."
Jian Yi was instantly
overjoyed by this unexpected turn of events. He held the sword in both hands.
The more he looked at it, the more he liked it. He was so happy that he didn't
even know what to say. Because of this excitement of his, his face gained a
faint blush again, looking very pink and tender.
Wen Xuan looked at the
light flush on Jian Yi's cheeks and stared without realizing for quite a while.
He knew a while ago that
this shidi of his was easily bashful and was already used to Jian Yi's blushing
problem that occurred randomly. However, when he saw this bashful look of Jian
Yi this time, he strangely had a different type of feeling.
When Jian Yi finally
became aware and lifted his head abruptly, Wen Xuan already shifted his line of
sight elsewhere. The
expression on Wen Xuan's
face was extremely natural, without any cracks or flaws.
In reality, however, Wen
Xuan was extremely conflicted and currently cursing himself relentlessly
inside. How come he was thinking randomly again? He only listened to a
conjecture that his shimei made without rhyme or reason. Why did he need to
take it seriously and use this kind of perspective to look at his Jian shidi?
"Shixiong,"
He heard Jian Yi say earnestly next to his ear: "Thank you."
"Is there any need
for thanks between you and me?" Wen Xuan expressed firmly: "And plus,
did I not receive plenty of things from you as well? This is an exchange of
favors."
"Shixiong, you're
right." Jian Yi smiled: "My things are shixiong's things
anyways."
This should only be a
joke, but when Wen Xuan heard it, his heart actually skipped a beat
unexpectedly.
"Speaking of
this." Jian Yi leaned next to Wen Xuan's ears with a secretive and
mysterious expression: "Before I told you that Elder Qi, /cough, my
current shifu, gifted me something really nice. Shixiong, do you know what it
is?"
Saying this, he didn't
wait for Wen Xuan to respond before pulling out something from his bracelet.
It looked like a sieve.
It was extremely filthy and hardly looked like anything of value. However,
since Jian Yi took it out in such a secretive and mysterious fashion, it
definitely can't be any regular
object. Wen Xuan
instantly became somewhat curious: "What is
it?"
Jian Yi chortled:
"Shifu said, this is called Spirit Exchanging Sieve."
"Spirit Exchanging
Sieve?" Wen Xuan was shocked: "The same Spirit Exchanging Sieve from
the Danxin Sect?"
He didn't need Jian Yi to
answer him to know. There was no second Spirit Exchanging Sieve in this world.
But the reputation of this Spirit Exchanging Sieve was really too well known,
he couldn't help but be surprised.
This was a divine tool
that belonged to an Elder of the Danxin Sect. Later, that Elder passed away, so
this divine tool disappeared without a trace. Who would have imagined it landed
in Qi Jibai's hands. As for the use of this divine tool. Supposedly, it can
turn all of the spiritual objects in the world into the purest form of
spiritual energy.
Thinking here, Wen Xuan's
gaze gradually dimmed. Although the reputation of this divine tool was well
known, its function was really...... not very useful at all.
After all, spiritual
objects were rare, while spiritual energy was all over in the air and on the
ground. This exchange was extremely not worth it. Although the spiritual energy
in the air wasn't that pure, other than the alchemists from Danxin Sect, regular
cultivators didn't need that kind of pure spiritual energy. Even if those
alchemists from Danxin Sect wanted to collect pure spiritual energy essence,
there were plenty of other methods. There was no need to use spiritual objects
in exchange. Not to mention, it
couldn't even swallow
anything by itself and needed someone to actively feed the objects into it.
As soon as Jian Yi saw
Wen Xuan's expression, he knew what the other was thinking. Immediately, he
winked at Wen Xuan, smiling like he was a crafty businessman: "Shixiong,
don't fret. If everyone didn't all think that's the only thing it's good for,
how could it remain in my shifu's hands safely for this long? And how would it
have landed in my hands right now?"
In other words, this
wasn't its only use.
Seeing Wen Xuan revealing
a curious expression, Jian Yi hastily leaned in and whispered in Wen Xuan's
ear, speaking lightly.
This breath of his
carried a faint warmth, blowing into Wen Xuan's ear and tickling him slightly.
However, Wen Xuan still
managed to focus on the content of Jian Yi's quiet words. His eyes shone
brighter and brighter as he listened.
As it turned out, after
this Spirit Exchanging Sieve swallowed enough spiritual materials, it can also
detect even stronger spiritual materials and point out their directions for its
owner. It's actually a very effective handheld treasure detector.
Done speaking, Jian Yi moved back slightly and wanted to
show off its abilities a little in front of Wen Xuan.
Jian Yi didn't know the
specific mechanism, but in the original novel, this Spirit Exchanging Sieve was
what Qin Shiyu used to find a naturally formed divine tool. His strength
instantly rose
exponentially as a
result, and in a single move, he established his position as a top cultivator
in this land. Although that was something that occurred later on and Jian Yi
still hasn't encountered the high quality spiritual materials that Qin Shiyu
used to feed the Spirit Exchanging Sieve yet, a poor man has a poor man's
methods. Even if he couldn't feed it high quality materials, he can still feed
it everything he had in hand. It'll eventually exchange for a better one in the
end, right?
Carrying this beautiful
dream, Jian Yi resolutely fed this Spirit Exchanging Sieve a handful of......
spiritual stones.
Spiritual stones come
from the spiritual energy in the ground. Naturally it was also a type of
spiritual object, but it's rather rough and crude.
Then Jian Yi activated it
and only saw this Spirit Exchanging Sieve...... not doing anything at all.
"Looks like
spiritual stones aren't enough." Wen Xuan sighed disappointedly.
"It's pretty hard to
please." Feeling like he lost face in front of Wen Xuan, Jian Yi gnashed
his teeth resentfully and anxiously. Then he flipped through all the things in
his storage bracelet, pulled out the magic tool he obtained as a new inner
disciple, and stuffed it ruthlessly into the Spirit Exchanging Sieve:
"Eat, and eat some more. You won't burst."
Also a spiritual object,
the grade of the magic tool was several levels higher than spiritual stones.
Watching the Spirit Exchanging Sieve swallow this emerald colored short sword
little by little and
turn it into pure
spiritual energy inside its belly, Jian Yi felt a bit pained, but even more so,
he was filled with hope inside.
However, when he
activated this Spirit Exchanging Sieve again, unexpectedly, this thing still
didn't move at all!
What's going on? It
wasn't broken right? Or was he screwed over by the original novel? And the
Spirit Exchanging Sieve actually didn't have that miraculous ability at all?
Doubt flashed across Jian
Yi's head continuously. His complexion couldn't help but turn pale. His heart
also became anxious as he persistently urged, wishing this stupid Spirit
Exchanging Sieve would do something.
Then, under this
desperate urging, the Spirit Exchanging Sieve really did move.
Jian Yi watched as its
gray discolored body tremble slightly, like it hiccuped. Then it spat out the
spiritual energy created from the spiritual stones and magic tool with a 'puu'
sound, releasing it all from the thin opening at the bottom.
Jian Yi looked stunned at
this ball of pure spiritual energy, watching wide-eyed as it gradually
dissipated in the air. At the same time, the divine tool in his hand sent out a
mood with its spiritual sense which transmitted into Jian Yi's divine sense.
What kind of mood was this? Filled with dissatisfaction, brimming with disdain,
full of dislike, a deep profound dislike.
Oh... you... fcking... A
mouthful of dirty words laid on the tip of Jian Yi's tongue. It was only
because Wen Xuan was present that he didn't curse them out loud immediately on
the spot.
What kind of messed up
thing was this! It's getting fed, yet it's disdaining the quality of the meal!
Did it think a magic tool was very cheap!
Jian Yi abruptly stood up
and practically wished he could smash this broken thing on the floor. However,
when he held it high above his head, Jian Yi suddenly felt reluctant again. In
the end, he could only return it back into his arms, dejected and depressed.
"You're really
something. Just wait until I get money in the future and find you something
good to eat. I'll give you a shit pile of stuff." Jian Yi grinded his
teeth in anger: "and stuff you to the brim."
"Haha!"
Watching this scene from beginning to end, Wen Xuan couldn't help but hold his
stomach and laugh uproariously: "Jian shidi, so you have a day like this
too!"
Jian Yi felt a bit
frustrated because of this laughter. Not good. Not good. The glorious image
that he built up after such difficulties, shredded into pieces here, just like
this.
When he lifted his head
and looked. He even saw a fluorescent light next to Wen Xuan. It was the divine
sword precursor, currently shaking as it circled Wen Xuan, as if it was howling
with laughter incessantly.
Ever since Wen Xuan fell
back into the foundation building stage, this sword precursor's grew much
bolder. Although Wen Xuan can still manage to get it to listen to instructions,
it often acted on its own accord just like what it was doing right now.
It's fine if he was only
laughed at by Wen Xuan. But to be laughed at by a flying sword, how can he
accept that?
"Go ahead. Keep
laughing, I dare you!" Jian Yi's face was filled with fury to the tip of
his brows. He rolled up his sleeves to catch it: "Want to bet and see if I
can feed you directly to my family's Spirit Exchanging Sieve?"
Wen Xuan was even more
amused, unable to straighten his back in laughter. He had no choice but to grab
Jian Yi's arms: "Alright alright, why are you bickering with a flying
sword?"
Because he grabbed Jian
Yi from behind, Jian Yi's entire back just happened to press against Wen Xuan's
chest as he continued to struggle desperately to give that flying sword a piece
of his mind.
At first, Wen Xuan still
had a smile, but as Jian Yi wiggled left and right unceasingly in his arms, he
slowly felt a bit strange. Abruptly letting go of Jian Yi's arms, Wen Xuan even
took a step backwards.
"Shixiong?" Jian Yi noted this odd behavior and
turned his head to look at Wen Xuan.
Shaking his head, Wen
Xuan made a serious face and said somewhat stiffly: "Enough messing
around. It's getting late. We should hurry along on our travels."
Saying this, he called
back the divine sword precursor into his sleeve and headed off on his own
first, leaving only the view of him from behind.
"Shixiong?"
Jian Yi hastily followed and chased him: "What's the matter?"
Wen Xuan shook his head.
For some unknown reason, he recalled when Jian Yi was speaking into his ear
before. The feeling of the other's breath blowing next his ear, carrying a
faint warmth that brushed against his curve of ear...... Because of this, Wen
Xuan's entire face, starting from the tip of his ear, started to heat up.
Promptly, he started walking even faster, not even daring to turn his head
around.
"Shixiong, don't
tell me you're angry again? Is it because I was bickering with your flying
sword just now and acted too childishly?" Following behind him, Jian Yi
carefully explained: "I was just playing, not really being serious. If you
don't like it, in the future, I......"
Wen Xuan couldn't bear
hearing him say this kind of words. So he had no choice but to halt his
footsteps: "This trivial matter...... of course I wouldn't mind."
Taking a deep breath, he calmed down and turned around: "Who said I'm
angry. I'm only in a hurry to get on the road."
"Really?"
Jian Yi looked at him suspiciously.
At a time like this, Wen
Xuan had an advantage. He wasn't like Jian Yi who turned red over every little
thing. As long as he deliberately made a serious face, no matter what he was
thinking inside, it wouldn't be exposed outwardly.
Therefore, after Jian Yi
examined him for a while, he had no choice but to believe in Wen Xuan's excuse.
Wen Xuan let out a breath
of relief. Then he rubbed Jian Yi's head with feigned composure: "If we
find a spiritual city quickly, we'll have a place to stay for the night."
Jian Yi obediently nodded
his head.
Then, the two people
continued on their travels. Wen Xuan didn't increase his pace again. Jian Yi
also didn't ask anything else, only followed by his side quietly.
After a while of this
peace, the two people took the path of another mountain road. Wen Xuan couldn't
resist shifting his gaze, secretly glancing at the youth beside him with the corner
of his eyes.
What made him feel
surprised was that Jian Yi was also looking at him. In fact, the other looked
like he's been watching Wen Xuan this entire time, but he just wasn't aware of
the gaze Jian Yi tossed over. Because this gaze didn't actually land on his
eyes, but rather it landed on his...... Wen Xuan felt somewhat surprised again.
This gaze actually landed on his lips.
That's right. Jian Yi was
looking fixed at his lips the entire time. Not only just looking, but looking
with a reddened face. The more he looked, the more his face flushed with
embarrassment.
...... what kind of
situation was this? Wasn't it just lips?
Wen Xuan only felt
inexplicably strange. Unconsciously extending the tip of his tongue, he lightly
licked his own lips.
Such a simple movement,
yet Jian Yi acted like he received a huge blow. Even his pace became chaotic
for a second. At the
same time, the redness
spread, spread, and spread on his face, covering another large area.
Just in this instant, Wen
Xuan also froze briefly. Not only because of Jian Yi's excessive response, but
also because the feeling of the tip of his tongue touching his own lips, soft
yet with a hint of moisture...... made him recall the nightmare he had not long
ago.
In that dream, he also
felt like his lips were touched by a certain soft and moist thing, sweeping
across them, or perhaps sucking on them briefly. Back then, he didn't think
much about it and only thought it was something that occurred in his dream. But
recalling it at this moment, that strange touch and the oppressive, bloody
scene in his dream, actually didn't match up.
Back then, when he was
startled awake from his dream, the first thing he saw was Jian Yi.
Could it be... no... no
way?
Wen Xuan jumped in shock
by his own sudden conjecture.
This series of thoughts,
although not a small amount, only churned in Wen Xuan's head for a split
second. At this same moment, Jian Yi lifted his head up in panic.
Coincidentally, he just happened to cross gazes with Wen Xuan, which caused Jian
Yi to become even more flustered.
This panic seemed to be a
certain proof. However, Wen Xuan was no longer willing to ponder any further.
He felt like his way of thinking was really too terrible. How could he be this
terrible. He was actually making assumptions about an innocent shidi like this,
it's really too inappropriate.
Therefore, Wen Xuan
hastily withdrew his gaze and shifted it onto the road before them, attempting
to also pull his train of thoughts back on the proper track.
However, with this quick
look, Wen Xuan abruptly halted.
Hold on.
The road that they were
walking on was not right.
He's seen the tree in
front them before.
"Jian shidi, be
careful." Some unknown person had set a maze array on this road and was
trying to trap them inside.
28
Chapter 28
In an instant, Wen Xuan
became vigilant. He looked around in all directions. Everything before his eyes
have clearly been altered by the array. All of the trees were only stiff
replications, blocking on the two sides of the road, covering the real view of
the surroundings.
Sure enough, they've
already entered a magic array. From the quality, the person who set up the
array clearly wasn't particularly skilled, perhaps only a beginner. However,
since Wen Xuan has fallen back into foundation building and Jian Yi was only in
qi refining, even such a basic magic array was enough to deal with them.
Just who was it? Was this
a deliberate ambush or an accidental encounter? Was the purpose to trap them or
to rob and murder?
As Wen Xuan carefully
backed up, he attempted to find the source of the array in the backdrop of this
replicated wilderness in order to figure out how to break this array.
Just at this moment, a
melodious, yet cold female laughter came from behind these layers of trees, as
if mocking him for overestimating his abilities. This laughter sounded slightly
familiar so its owner should be someone that Wen Xuan has met before.
However, Wen Xuan didn't
have time to delve into his memories in search of the owner of this voice. The
illusion of this wilderness suddenly shook. A pile of arrows suddenly appeared
out of nowhere, so numerous and dense that they covered the sky as they shot
towards Wen Xuan and Jian Yi, creating a loud whistling sound of wind.
"Shidi,
careful!" Wen Xuan's complexion abruptly changed. He hastily summoned the
divine sword precursor out to block in front of him as he moved swiftly back at
the same time. However, this pile of arrows already filled every corner of his
view, impossible to avoid. In the midst of Wen Xuan's panic, Jian Yi remained
standing in the same spot, frozen and stupefied, looking like he's about to be
shot full of holes into a honeycomb by the arrows.
"Shidi!"
Instantly, blood drained from Wen Xuan's face. He hastily reached out a hand in
an attempt to grab Jian Yi.
However, after making
this move, he subconsciously felt something wasn't right.
What kind of astute
person was Jian Yi? Even if he unknowingly stepped in someone's trap and got
startled at first, why would he still have no response by this point? In the
face of this kind of
situation, would he not know to dodge out of the way?
Furthermore, in facing those arrows that were flying towards his face, not only
did Jian Yi's body not move, even his expression didn't even change.
He just stood there
stiffly, like a wooden puppet.
Right in the last moment,
Wen Xuan resolutely withdrew his extended hand again. At the same time, he
pushed off the ground with the tip of his toes and floated outwards a distance
away, focused only on protecting himself. That wasn't actually his Jian shidi.
He was 99% sure that was only an illusion.
Pupupu! The arrows landed
and made a wave of noise in succession. Many of them landed directly on Jian
Yi's body, but sure enough, they all traveled through completely. Because the
skills of the person who set up this array wasn't high, the image of Jian Yi
and the arrows looked like they existed in two separate spaces that had no
contact in between, making everything look hilariously fake.
However, even though he
already knew it was all fake, seeing this scene, Wen Xuan still couldn't help
but let out a breath of relief. Surprisingly, he was so scared that he had cold
sweats all over his back. Wen Xuan reached out to touch one of the arrows next
to his foot, but even this arrow was fake.
At this moment, that
female voice sounded again: "They all say Cultivator Wen from the Water
Cloud Sect is kindhearted and benevolent and looked after his fellow shidis the
most. Who would have thought you'd be this kind of cold hearted and cold
blooded person!"
Am I to blame for this? Wasn't it because your illusion
array was too fake? The corner of Wen Xuan's mouth twitched. He didn't bother
replying.
However, through these
words, he finally remembered where this person came from: "Cultivator Xue
from the Penglai Sect?"
That woman abruptly
silenced, instantly not daring to speak more
"My shidi and I
generally have no animosity with the Penglai Sect. It's only you who suffered
defeat in Jian shidi's hands last time, which was even because you made a
malicious move first." Brows furrowing, Wen Xuan said with a raised voice:
"Yet in order to get revenge, you'd actually prepare an ambush in the
middle of our travels? Cultivator Xue, this is not the behavior of a virtuous
person."
"Who asked for your
nonsense!" That woman yelled indignantly. It really was Xue BingEr from
the North Penglai Sect, no doubt.
That day, she and Qin
Shiyu faced off against Wen Xuan and Jian Yi in the ancient mausoleum and ended
up leaving head and face filthy with grime. Then, Qin Shiyu made a contract
with the two people so that the Penglai Sect couldn't get involved in this
business. However, this didn't prevent Xue BingEr from coming in person to get
her revenge.
"Hehehe, Xue meimei,
don't get angry." Thinking to this point, Wen Xuan actually heard a man's
voice say: "This guy's already trapped like a turtle in a jar. Who cares
what he says?"
So Xue BingEr wasn't the
only person who came? Wen Xuan's face pulled long. The situation before him now
looked even more serious than what he originally assumed.
Yet even as he conversed
with Xue BingEr, he didn't stop observing this illusion array this whole time.
A stiffened version of
arrows, a stiffened version of Jian shidi, a stiffened version of duplicated
trees. In this rude illusion, there was only one tree that had a leaf which
moved slightly to the wind. Wen Xuan followed his intuition. With a flick of
his fingertip, an Ice Blade flew out instantly and promptly penetrated that
leaf thoroughly with the speed of a lightning bolt.
"Wha......"
This surprised voice actually came from a third person.
Wen Xuan's heart sank a
few more degrees. Then, the view before his eyes shook as the illusion
shattered into pieces, finally revealing the real surroundings.
As expected, Xue BingEr
stood by the roadside. Her figure was surrounded by one, two, three, four, a
total of four men. All together, there were five people, all foundation
building. The only thing worth celebrating was the fact that Qin Shiyu didn't
appear.
5 vs 2? Wen Xuan looked
over and couldn't help but smile bitterly: No. It's 5 vs 1.
After the completely fake
arrows disappeared from where they scattered all over the ground, a sharp blade
appeared where Wen Xuan and Jian Yi originally stood, stabbed into the ground
next to a round dome.
That sharp blade was not
only thick, but also long. It pierced down in the same location as where Jian
Yi originally stood. If Wen Xuan wasn't able to discern that the other Jian Yi
was only an illusion and persisted in trying to save him, he probably would
have been pierced through completely by this blade and most likely been killed,
without a doubt.
That round dome appeared
in the position where Wen Xuan originally stood. Clearly, the two objects were
a set. In the illusion, it also made Jian Yi think that Wen Xuan remained
frozen where he stood, tricking Jian Yi to rush over so that it could trap him
inside the round dome...... Very unfortunately, they were successful.
Through the faint golden
exterior of this round dome, Wen Xuan could see Jian Yi being held securely
inside. The other's complexion was unsightly as he gnashed his teeth in fury.
People say worry leads to a chaotic heart. Jian Yi fell for
this tactic well justified.
Of course, Jian Yi didn't
sit there and wait for death. He was currently holding his flying sword and
furiously hacking away at the surface of the round dome.
"Jian shidi,"
Wen Xuan asked: "Are you ok?"
That illusion array
clearly also separated the two people's voices before. Now that Jian Yi heard
Wen Xuan call him, he couldn't help but hack away more vigorously. However, the
round dome remained unchanged.
"Don't waste your
energy." A short man with the head of a dear and the eyes of a mouse
laughed: "Although this golden cicada dome isn't anything amazing, I used
up quite a tremendous effort to find it after I became foundation building. A
mere qi refining brat like you think you can break it? Wishful thinking!"
This person was wearing a
light yellow cultivator robe with a round pearl pinned to his chest, showing
that he came from Danxin Sect.
As soon as he finished
saying these words, the color of that round dome abruptly changed. It began
shooting out rounds of purple colored lightning within its interior, striking
ruthlessly towards Jian Yi. Jian Yi's response was also very quick. Instantly,
he pulled out a defensive magic tool and protected himself completely.
At this time, Wen Xuan
already sent the shadow of his sword inconspicuously over. His divine sword
precursor abruptly appeared out of nowhere and hit the outside of the dome
violently. However, that round dome only trembled slightly. Clearly, it was
even harder to break from the outside than the inside.
However, the divine sword
precursor was still a divine sword precursor. Even if Wen Xuan weakened because
of falling back into the foundation building stage, the sword was still a
strong weapon. As long as he can hit it a few more times, breaking the round
dome was an eventual thing.
Nevertheless, how could
the five people opposing him just watch wide-eyed and unmoving as he rescued
Jian Yi out? Two of those people raised their swords and started attacking Wen
Xuan together from different angles, forcing Wen Xuan to dodge left
and right, too busy to
pay attention to anything else. These two people, one was tall and bulky, the
other was slim and skinny. The robes they wore were very similar to what Xue
BingEr was wearing. Clearly, they were the aid she gathered from the North
Penglai Sect.
"Haha, Cultivator
Wen is really quite skilled." Twirling a lock of hair next to her ear, Xue
BingEr said, laughing viciously: "Here I thought we'd be able to eliminate
you, then slowly torture this brat. Who would have thought I'd
miscalculate."
"Hehehe, what's the
difference between the current situation and directly eliminating him? It's
only an extra step, that's all." Another man who looked slightly handsome,
with the corner of his eyes raised like a fox, chortled as soon as he opened
his mouth. Clearly he was also a crafty, sinister character.
This person was dressed
in a maroon colored robe, with a bird feather brooch on his collar. He was from
the Cerulean Feather Sect.
As Wen Xuan faced 1v2, he
observed all of these five people with cold eyes at the same time. He couldn't
help but scoff: "Cerulean Feathers Sect, Danxin Sect, North Penglai Sect.
So all of you Three Outer Clans have gathered here today?"
The Penglai Sect has
their North Penglai branch. Danxin Sect has their Outer Danxin branch. Now add
in Violet Feather Sect's Cerulean Feathers branch. All of them were the
tentacles that the big cultivation Sects of the Central Sheng Continent used to
extend into the North Ning Continent. They were called the Three Outer Clans of
the North Ning Continent.
Meanwhile, with the Water
Cloud Sect as head, the other Sects that originated from the North Ning
Continent were called the Four Inner Clans.
All of these clans in
unison were called the Seven Mystical Sects of North Ning Continent. In
comparison, the disciples of the Four Inner Clans were all rather low key. They
liked to cultivate behind closed doors. Even if they went out traveling to gain
experience of the outer world, they didn't like to cause trouble. However, the
disciples of the Three Outer Clans were just like their main sect. All of them
loved to extend their fingers. The influences left by their presence could be
seen everywhere.
"What Three Outer
Clan? Is this the time to talk about secular discrimination? It's not like we
came in the name of our Sect today." That fox eyed man said, smiling:
"It's only because Xue-mei has the appearance of a flower and a face like
the moon, delicate and charming. And we, as men, can't bear to see her bullied,
so we came to accompany her, that's all."
In other words, this was
all Xue Bing Er's personal business, unrelated to the Sects.
"Zhao gege, what's
the point of saying this to him?" Xue BingEr said displeased: "Are
you afraid he'll survive and complain to your Sect or something?"
As soon as she finished saying this, there was a 'qiang'
sound. In that instant, Wen Xuan broke the sword of one of his opponents in
half.
Xue BingEr's face color
instantly turned black. Cursing quietly to herself 'what a bunch of losers,'
she took out her silk cloth and jumped into the battle.
As Wen Xuan used his
sword to ward off several people's attacks, in between, he took the opportunity
to summon Ice Blades and strike back. Even one vs many, he didn't find himself
at a disadvantage. After all, he fell down from the yuan gathering stage. His
insight, experience, and even skills usage weren't something these foundation
building cultivators can compare to.
However, since it was 1
vs 5, how long can he persevere onward? He was already slowly becoming tired.
Wen Xuan noticed the
weariness of his body. His gaze continuously moving about, still searching for
a chance to rescue Jian Yi out of the round dome. For the moment, that was
their only path of survival.
29
Chapter 29
For Wen Xuan to not be at
a disadvantage in this kind of circumstances, it's because he fell down from
the yuan gathering stage. However, it was also because he came from the yuan
gathering stage that he still held many yuan gathering habits. His physical
strength and spiritual energy couldn't keep up and eventually it became a
strain.
For example, he wanted to
replicate the same method he used against Luo Qingquan before, using his flying
sword to battle against his enemy while switching between the real and shadows
of the Ice Blades at the same time. But when he tried briefly moments before,
he immediately felt a head splitting pain. It was really impossible to achieve
with his currently foundation building strength. In fact, it even flustered him
temporarily as a result.
After Xue BingEr joined
in the battle, this strenuous effort reached its peak. However, he still
managed to hold on forcibly, not revealing any hint of weakness on his face.
This appearance like he could deal with them with ease endlessly made his
opponents baffled and
uncertain. The more they fought, the more anxious they became.
"Zhao gege!"
Xue BingEr couldn't resist yelling: "Why aren't you helping yet!"
At this moment, the only
person that hasn't joined the battle, other than the Danxin Sect disciple who
was in charge of controlling the round dome, was this Cerulean Feathers guy.
Meanwhile, in the round
dome, Jian Yi, at this time, already brought out all of 5-6 of the defensive
equipment that Wen Xuan gave to him and encased himself tightly within them.
While resisting the lightning inside the dome, he continued to desperately hack
away at the surface of the dome from within, panicking so hard that blue veins
were bulging out of his neck.
"Hehehe, meimei,
don't fret. Look at my skills." After this yell from the Zhao guy of the
Cerulean Feathers Sect, he decisively reached into the pouch on his waist and
pulled out a...... bald eagle.
The Cerulean Feathers and
Violet Feather Sect have a common origin. They were experts at capturing and
raising all kinds of demonic beasts.
After this bald eagle was
pulled out, that Zhao guy instructed it to flew over and peck out Wen Xuan's
eyes. However, Wen Xuan didn't even make free time to deal with it yet when it
already screeched suddenly, made an emergency stop in mid flight, and then flew
back where it came from like it was escaping from something. It landed back on
to that Zhao guy's shoulder, trembling and shaking.
That Zhao guy hehe'd:
"I heard rumours about Cultivator Wen of the Water Cloud Sect was the bane
of demonic beasts before. So they really are true."
Xue BingEr was so mad,
she stomped her feet.
Yet the Zhao guy didn't
even feel ashamed and continued to watch the people fight, as if victory was at
hand and all was going as planned.
Meanwhile, Jian Yi
already stopped his futile attacks over there, completely sitting down
dumbfoundedly under the layers and layers of protection. Moments later, he even
closed his eyes. His spiritual energy was concealed behind the round dome. No
one knew what he was doing so they can only assume that he finally gave up. If
he didn't give up, what else could he do? He was only qi refining after all.
The reason they used this round dome to trap him was just to take advantage of
his cultivation level.
Wen Xuan was at the last
of his strength. However, he didn't want to give up yet. Under this kind of
situation, he actually became more ferocious the more he fought, and ended up
pushing those people to retreat slightly. He wanted to squeeze out an
opportunity and hit the round dome at least a few times more. As long as he could
rescue Jian Yi, he could create a chance of survival for them.
However, just as he
clenched his jaw and planned to throw all his strength in one go, one of his
feet stepped into some grass. Suddenly, he felt a sting to his ankle like he
was bitten by something.
This pain was extremely
trivial, but on the contrary, Wen Xuan became extremely vigilant. He abruptly
retreated out of the circle that these people had him in. Lifting up the hem of
his pants, he looked. The view immediately made his scalp feel numb. There was
a small pinhole on his ankle where a small black colored bug was burying into
his body.
"Hehehe,
hahaha!" That Zhao guy from the Cerulean Feathers Sect instantly let out a
big laugh: "You fell for it, you really fell for it!"
Grinding his teeth, Wen
Xuan turned the sharp blade in his hand around and made a cut at the area of
the injury, spilling a bunch of blood. However, that little black bug had
already disappeared, who knows where it dug into.
"It's futile!"
The Zhao guy from Cerulean Feathers Sect whistled: "Unless you want to
directly chop off that leg! Oh no, at this point, even if you chop off that
leg, it'd be useless. You might as well stab yourself and end it.
Hahahaha!"
Seeing this situation,
Xue BingEr smiled slightly. She even made a hand gesture and had the other two
people stop attacking. Instead, they backed off and guarded in front of that
Zhao guy from Cerulean Feathers Sect.
"What the heck is this?" Wen Xuan asked with a
darkened face.
"No rush, no rush.
You'll know soon enough." Smiling, that Zhao guy from Cerulean Feathers
Sect pulled out a small box from the pouch on his waist, then pulled out a dog
shaped demonic beast. Then, he opened that small box. Inside, surprisingly,
there was another small black bug that looked completely the same.
This person's mouth split
wide open as he laughed nonstop, clearly thinking about something sinister. His
gaze remained on that little black bug for a moment, then shifted back to Wen
Xuan with a smile. Then, he moved his gaze onto the dog shaped demonic beast,
his eyes practically beaming with light.
The numb tingling feeling
on Wen Xuan's scalp instantly traveled down his spine. He couldn't help but
feel waves of chills in his body. Although he still didn't know what would happen,
this intense unease was already compelling him to charge over, sword flashing.
However, with three
entire people guarding in front of that person, firmly blocking Wen Xuan's
offense, Wen Xuan couldn't get close at all.
"Cultivator Wen,
it's time for you to regret." Xue BingEr's expression was malevolent:
"Very quickly you'll regret that you didn't die immediately in our ambush
just now!"
"Hahahaha!"
That guy from the Cerulean Feathers Sect let out another wave of pleased, wild
laugh.
With one hand, he
squeezed the dog shaped demonic beast's mouth, and opened its jaw. With the
other hand, he started putting the little black bug into its mouth, about to
feed it to the dog.
"No!" The
intense unease made Wen Xuan feel like his heart was dropped in a hole of ice.
The light of his sword shone even brighter, but he was still unable to break
the defense before his eyes: "Stop!"
No one paid attention to
his struggle. Everyone was laughing maliciously.
Yet just at this time, a
loud and crisp, cracking sound was heard. It sounded extremely out of place
amongst the sound of laughter.
"What?" The guy
who was in charge of controlling the Golden Cicada dome instantly cried out in
alarm.
This alarm didn't even
finish when a black shadow already rushed in front of his eyes.
Right now the situation
was this. Xue BingEr and the other two people were all standing in the front,
blocking Wen Xuan. This Danxin Sect disciple and that guy from Cerulean
Feathers Sect were both standing in the back. When the black shadow charged
over, those three people were already too slow to stop him. This Danxin
disciple was scared so witless that he only knew to back up.
However, this black
figure didn't bother with him at all. With lightning speed, his sword swung
directly down over the head of the Cerulean Feathers guy.
Of course, this black
shadow that abruptly charged over can only be Jian Yi. At this moment, where
Jian Yi originally stood, the light golden dome already shattered, breaking
down into pieces of crystal fragments on the floor. In this last minute peril,
he actually managed to break out of the dome himself.
But just how did he
manage to break out? No one was able to figure out this answer, so they
inevitably all became somewhat stunned. Even the defense against Wen Xuan
halted momentarily.
That guy from the
Cerulean Feathers Sect was also scared stiff by this sudden situation. His hand
unconsciously loosened. That dog shaped demonic beast instantly yowled and ran
far away.
However, the little black
bug still remained in his other hand.
"Jian shidi!"
Seeing this scene, Wen Xuan shouted in warning: "Careful!"
However, this shout was
already too slow. At the same moment that the sword swung down, that Cerulean
Feathers guy reflexively turned his palm and smacked it forward, landing
directly on Jian Yi's neck.
In a flash, the little
black bug immediately drilled in.
"Jian
shidi......" Wen Xuan didn't have a chance to worry when he felt like he
was struck heavily, forcing him to take a step backwards.
Just at this moment, he
suddenly felt many strange, odd feelings emerge in his heart. There were
many...... many emotions that did not belong to himself, many thoughts that
didn't belong to himself, and many things that he's never seen before in his
entire life. All of this rampaged through his heart like a wave and then left.
However, these things
were too many and too complicated. They only rolled turbulently by in his
bewildered heart, not leaving
behind anything
specifically to remember, only the feeling like his heart and blood were
connected to someone else.
However, there was an
image, because it was really too strange, that Wen Xuan remembered.
It was a square-shaped
room. The walls were built by some unknown soil and flattened like it was cut
by a blade. Every face of the extremely flat walls in this room were painted
exceptionally white. In this white room, there was a window. The style of the
window looked very strange to Wen Xuan as well. It was covered by a similarly
white cloth curtain. Clean white bed sheets, clean white blankets, clean white
clothes, a clean white door. There was a strange bottle hanging at the head of
the bed. The surroundings had some strange equipment that made beeping noises.
An odd aroma lingered in the air. Not pleasant, but not repulsive, hard to
describe, but also hard to ignore.
This was the image that
repeated itself the most from all of the thoughts and emotions suddenly
transmitted from Jian Yi.
Although the image was so
spotless and white, the feeling it gave Wen Xuan wasn't bright and clean, but
rather somewhat desolate and melancholic.
Wen Xuan wanted to
carefully examine this image some more, however, this feeling of their hearts
and emotions being connected passed by in a blink of an eye. When Wen Xuan came
back to himself and saw the reality before him again, he just stood steady
after taking the prior step back.
Fortunately, the three
people surrounding him were also in a state of shock from astonishment and
didn't take this time to attack him.
As for what was going on
behind these three people, that short Danxin Sect disciple had already fallen
to the floor in fright, almost peeing on himself.
Before this person's
eyes, Jian Yi's hand was raised after his sword landed, his blade sharp enough
to cut through iron as if it were mud. He had directly chopped off half of the
Cerulean Feathers guy's head. Half of that head landed to the side, still
rolling around, spraying the floor full of white and red things, extremely
disgusting and terrifying.
At this moment, Jian Yi
was currently touching his neck with a hand. The tip of his finger was lightly
pressed against the pin hole that the little black bug had created with its
bite. His brows were slightly furrowed. In that brief moment just now, his
emotions and feelings were also connected with Wen Xuan. However, since he
already knew about Wen Xuan's past, he wasn't affected as much.
Bright red blood dripped
down his sword like water, gathering into a small puddle. This wasn't the same
sword that was in Jian Yi's hand before, but rather a new one that he just
switched to. This one was the sword Wen Xuan handed to him beforehand, the good
blade that was most suitable for a foundation building cultivator.
Jian Yi removed his
fingers from his neck and smiled in disdain. Holding the blood-stained sword
with fury in his eyes, the corner
of his mouth hooked into
a smile as he looked at the rest of the remaining people: "Should I be
thanking you guys?"
Just as he was trapped in
the round dome in such a desperate situation, without any options to retreat,
Jian Yi staked everything on one gamble and actually, in that moment of life
and death, managed to breakthrough into the foundation building stage.
Then, with this furious
smile and both eyes narrowed, he raised his sword and slowly walked past the
corpse that was missing half its skull. Step by step, he walked in front of the
other people, covered head to toe by the fresh blood that had sprayed out,
looking like a vengeful spirit that just stepped out of hell.
Not only the Danxin
disciple, even the other three people were so terrified that their faces turned
green.
Although they weren't
virtuous people, they weren't very old. They rarely encountered this kind of
blooding scene. Even to this point, they still haven't recovered.
At this moment, all of
Jian Yi's spiritual presence was pouring outward. This was already the presence
of a foundation building cultivator. Perhaps it's because of Jian Yi's
wonderfully harmonious five element spiritual roots or because of his current
rage, this spiritual presence felt even stronger than normal foundation
building cultivators.
"Ah!
Ahhhhhhhhhh!" Stimulated by this spiritual presence, that Danxin disciple
suddenly jumped up from the ground. Not caring about anything else, he
scrambled away, running in terror.
Jian Yi didn't even
bother with him.
After beheading the
despicable Cerulean Feathers guy, Jian Yi only had one person he's been eyeing
with hatred-- Xue BingEr.
Jian Yi abruptly picked
up speed, the tip of his sword creating a screeching sound as it scraped along
the floor He charged in front of Xue Binger in an instant. Without a doubt, he
wanted to strike this woman down with one blow.
Xue BingEr let out a
scream, then attacked frantically, wanting to use attack as a means of defense.
However, even in qi refining, Jian Yi was never afraid of her. So why would he
be afraid now? He easily evaded this random and frightened attack with a slight
shift of his body as his sharp blade continued to pierce towards Xue BingEr. In
that instant, the swift blade looked like it was going to slash her face.
The two male North
Penglai disciples, who were originally standing guard beside her, were still
intimidated by Jian Yi's spiritual presence. Even now, they still didn't
recover enough to respond.
In such a situation, it
looked like Jian Yi was about to take this woman's life in the next breath.
However, Xue Bing Er still managed to escape this
calamity.
What saved Xue BingEr
wasn't any person, but rather a magic tool that she carried. At the last
second, a jade pendant that was hanging on her waist lit up abruptly and
released a white light that enveloped Xue BingEr completely, blocking Jian Yi's
attack. After the white light dissipated, Xue BingEr actually gone without a
trace.
A magic tool that carried
a teleportation function?
Jian Yi's cheek twitched.
He could only gloomily swing his sword: "These rich people." Then his
gaze turned outward to look at the two people remaining.
These two people finally
acted when they saw Jian Yi's blade practically touching the tip of Xue
BingEr's nose. They were just about to attack Jian Yi when they were blocked by
Wen Xuan who also recovered from his shock. Then the scene with Xue Bing Er
escaping via the white light completely stunned these two people.
When Jian Yi turned his
eyes over to them, was there any need for further hesitation? They immediately
grabbed their sword and ran.
Jian Yi actually wanted
to give chase, but his body ended up tilting sideways uncontrollably. To give
two killing blows right after he broke through into foundation building in such
an unstabilized state with his spiritual energy still fluctuating, it actually
wasn't such a great feeling.
"Jian shidi!"
Wen Xuan rushed to his side and quickly held him up.
At this moment, of the
people who were blocking the road, the dead have died, the frightened have run
away. Jian Yi let out a breath of relief and directly let his body collapse in
Wen Xuan's arms, not concealing his moment of weakness at all.
Wen Xuan held both of Jian
Yi's hands and carefully transferred his own spiritual energy over, slowly
helped him sort out the fluctuating spiritual energy in his body. Moments
later, Jian Yi felt
much better and
unconsciously closed his eyes slightly. Wen Xuan's gaze landed on his faintly
fluttering eyelashes. Looking at it for a long while, he then looked at the
other's pale white face, and at last, he turned to look at Jian Yi's neck.
On the lateral side of
Jian Yi's neck, the small red pinhole mark remained on his snow white skin,
extremely eye-catching.
"Jian
shidi......" Wen Xuan wanted to say something, but stopped himself. With a
strange expression, he then looked at the horrifying looking corpse of the guy
from the Cerulean Feathers Sect.
Jian Yi opened his eyes.
Seeing this view, he assumed that Wen Xuan felt he shouldn't have killed this
person.
Wen Xuan really didn't
like killing, but since it was done in such a situation, Wen Xuan didn't feel
too conflicted. At this moment, Wen Xuan was distubed by another thing.
He lightly touched the
pinhole on Jian Yi's neck. His fingertip was slightly cool, causing Jian Yi to
shiver.
"What exactly is
this?" Wen Xuan asked.
"A type of parasitic
poison." Flinching, Jian Yi answered: "Something that the Cerulean
Feathers Sect raised to play with.”
Wen Xuan immediately felt surprised: "You know?"
Jian Yi was momentarily
speechless. Very clearly, although Wen Xuan had asked him, he didn't actually
expect Jian Yi to answer. It was more mumbling to himself.
However, since Jian Yi
knew, Wen Xuan continued to ask: "What kind of parasitic poison?"
".......probably an
empathy parasite." Then, not waiting for Wen Xuan to inquire again, Jian
Yi followed up: "I also don't know the details."
This of course was a lie.
The empathy parasite appeared countless times in the original novel, its
function was repeatedly emphasized. Jian Yi already remembered it clearly. In a
later part of the novel, this was how Qin Shiyu got together with one of the
girls.
However, since Jian Yi
said it, Wen Xuan didn't suspect anything. He only sighed 'how unfortunate' to
himself.
Although the details were
unclear, according to the strange feeling the instant he and Jian Yi fell under
the effect of this move, as well as its name 'empathy parasite,' Wen Xuan can
assume that the two little black bugs were two aspects of a whole. Just like
how there's two ends to a line, it can connect the heart and emotions of two
people that suffered its poison. Thinking about this, then recalling how the
other little bug was almost fed to the dog shaped demonic beast, Wen Xuan
couldn't help but feel nauseated.
But now that the person
who experienced the parasitic poison with him was Jian Yi, Wen Xuan's mood was
even more complicated. On one hand, he rejoiced that the person who he
connected his heart with wasn't anyone else. On the other hand, he didn't know
if this parasitic blood would cause any further
harm for the two of them.
He couldn't help but think he dragged Jian Yi into this mess.
"Shixiong......"
Right at this moment, Jian Yi carefully asked him: "When we were affected
by the parasite, did you... see something?"
Wen Xuan looked at him
strangely: "Did you see anything?"
"A bit of shixiong's
past." Jian Yi answered: "but it only flashed by so I didn't see
clearly.”
Past? The scene that he
saw at that time was actually the other person's past?
so that strange
spotlessly white room was actually Jian Yi's past?
Wen Xuan opened his lips,
a question already rolling to the tip of his tongue, but he didn't ask it outloud.
Jian shidi, what happened
in your past? This question, Wen Xuan felt like he couldn't inquire. It wasn't
until this moment in time that he finally realized that in terms of the past of
this young man before him, he actually knew absolutely nothing about.
And through Jian Yi's
currently nervous appearance, Wen Xuan could perceive that the other didn't
want him to know either.
Therefore, Wen Xuan fell
into an awkward silence.
In this awkward silence,
the corpse of the person from the Cerulean feathers Sect, that was neglected by
these two people, suddenly moved slightly.

Chapter 30
In a southeast area of
North Ning Continent where the North Penglai Sect was stationed, a blinding
white light appeared out of nowhere in a certain room. When this white light
faded away, a girl in her prime age dropped out from the air. This was Xue
BingEr who just escaped a close death from Jian Yi.
At this time, Xue BingEr
was still frightened and stunned. Her face was deathly pale as she trembled
uncontrollably. It took her quite a while to recover. Then, she gnashed her
teeth, the fury and distress of being forced to such a state instantly spiraled
upward. She was so mad that she stomped her feet angrily. Throwing her sleeve,
she planned to go complain tearfully to the Elders of her sect.
She just left her room,
not even walking two steps down the hallway, when she bumped into someone. This
just happened to be Qin Shiyu.
"Where did you go just now?" Qin Shiyu said:
"I searched for you for a long time."
Xue BingEr's footsteps
halted, an awkward expression appearing on her face. Afterall, her actions this
time were done completely in secret from the other. However, mere moments
later, this awkwardness was engulfed by her stomach full of grievances. The
corner of her eyes reddened, she directly started complaining about the
encounter she experienced just now to Qin Shiyu.
"That brat is really the devil!" Xue Bing Er
wailed with tears: "Cultivator Zhao from the Cerulean Feathers Sect died
just like that in his hands! Then, he even wanted to take my life!"
Qin Shiyu advised her
with a warm voice, but inside, he felt rather exasperated. Even though Xue
BingEr did her best to describe herself and her group as innocent, what kind of
person was Qin Shiyu? How could he not figure out the cause and effect of this
entire situation? He was annoyed that Jian Yi almost took Xue BingEr's life,
but at the same time, he was also displeased that Xue Bing Er ignored his
warning to not provoke Jian Yi any further. In the end, he can only say:
"It's fine if you talk to me about this matter, but you should definitely
not speak of this to others. If it really spread, reason might not be on your
side."
Xue BingEr opened her
mouth in discontent, but she really couldn't find any words to dispute.
"But...... Did
Cultivator Zhao from the Cerulean Feathers Sect really die in their
hands?" Qin Shiyu's brows furrowed, repeatedly verifying this extremely
noteworthy news: "Are you certain?"
"Of course, I am! I
saw it with my own eyes. How can it be false?" Xue BingEr answered
resolutely.
Saying this, she paused
for a second: "That's right. Cultivator Zhao is a disciple from Cerulean
Feathers. We have to tell the Cerulean Feathers Sect. They definitely will get
revenge for him!"
However, Qin Shiyu didn't
actually believe matters could be this simple. He has seen that Cultivator Zhao
several times before and always felt that the other was rather strange. He
didn't seem like the type of character who'd die that easily. However, what Xue
BingEr said was correct. They definitely needed to inform Cerulean Feathers.
Then according to Cerulean Feathers' response, maybe they could find some areas
to exploit.
"Since I know this
matter now, let me be the one to take a visit to Cerulean Feathers. Shimei, why
don't you go back to your room and take a good rest, calm down a little.
Remember, don't talk about this thing to others."
While Qin Shiyu was
saying these words, far away in that mountain ridge, Wen Xuan and Jian Yi were
currently discussing the matters about the empathy parasite. Meanwhile the
corpse that they neglected behind them suddenly moved slightly.
Right at the moment when
it moved, Wen Xuan coincidentally shifted his gaze away from Jian Yi in
awkwardness from not knowing what to say in reply. His line of sight just
happened to sweep across the corpse.
The corpse instantly stiffened and stopped all movements.
Since Wen Xuan turned to
look at this corpse, he didn't move his gaze away again. He even sighed
unconsciously: "Jian shidi, this person died in your hands."
"So what? Should he
not have died?" Jian Yi made a face: "Is shixiong criticizing me for
killing him?"
"Of course I'm not
criticizing. But the others have already escaped. What if they......"
If any of those people
passed on this fact to the Cerulean Feathers Sect, what would be waiting for
them can only be endless troubles. Wen Xuan didn't elaborate completely on
these words, but it didn't prevent Jian Yi from understanding his meaning.
"It is a bit
troublesome....." Jian Yi got up and walked over, looking at the corpse
several times with furrowed brows, clearly trying to decide on how to best
handle it.
With Jian Yi looking, that corpse was even more afraid to
move.
A moment later, Jian Yi
shook his head: "We'll just have to take the appropriate actions when the
time comes, that's all."
He clearly didn't
discover anything. And saying these words, it basically meant he didn't think
of any good plans.
Wen Xuan laughed
helplessly. In facing such perfunctory words, he can only acknowledge and voice
agreement: "Thinking too much might not be beneficial either. We can only
see as we go. Worrying more will only make trouble for ourselves first."
Saying these words, the
corner of Wen Xuan's mouth lifted. Unexpectedly, his eyes lit up with a certain
crafty light: "They were the ones who attacked us first. Dying in our
counterattack, no matter how they explain it, they won't be able to sound
justified. If the Three Outer Clans wanted to use this matter to find trouble,
worst comes to worst, we can cause a big ruckus, loud enough to be heard by the
Four Inner Clan. They definitely won't remain indifferent."
As expected of Wen shixiong. Even in his rare moment of
craftiness, the idea he came up with was still so honorable.
Jian Yi couldn't help but
smile. This smile carried a 20% fond exasperation, 50% appreciation, and 120%
indulgence and pampering. That's right. Clearly Jian Yi was much younger than
Wen Xuan and had to call Wen Xuan, shixiong. Even his cultivation only recently
caught up to foundation building. No matter what, he should be treating Wen
Xuan with admiration and reliance. However, this smile of his clearly contained
indulgence and pampering.
"What are you
smiling about?" Perceiving this slightly, Wen Xuan looked at him
suspiciously.
"Smiling
at....." how cute you are.
Jian Yi didn't say the
rest of the words out loud, only soundlessly formed the words with his mouth.
Done speaking, he didn't
give Wen Xuan any chance to respond before asking him immediately: "Shixiong,
isn't there something you've forgotten to say to me?"
Surprised, Wen Xuan
furrowed his brows and turned his focus completely on this question.
"I became foundation building after such troubles, you
didn't even congratulate me." Jian Yi announced the answer.
Wen Xuan didn't know if he should laugh or cry. This was
the first time he saw someone request for congratulations like this.
"Shixiong....,"
Leaning in to him, Jian Yi looked at Wen Xuan full of anticipation. His cheeks
even turned light red again.
"Oh you." Wen
Xuan reached out, his fingertip lightly sliding down Jian Yi's lightly flushed
cheeks. Jian Yi instantly shivered. However, not giving the other a chance to
evade, Wen Xuan abruptly changed his caress into a squeeze, and even squeezed rather
mercilessly: "Really worthy of congratulations!"
Aiyo! Jian Yi promptly
yelled. Covering his face, he ran as far as he could.
Sitting on the ground,
Wen Xuan laughed and laughed, his hand smacking the ground in his laughter. He
laughed completely without restraint, as if all of those years of depressed
emotions finally dissipated after just a few days of interactions with Jian Yi,
only leaving behind a sense of carefree and delight coming from the bottom of
his heart. Clearly, he was a person who loved smiling. However, the smile he
had on right now was definitely far brighter than all of the smiles he gave
before.
Looking at this smile,
Jian Yi unconsciously became captivated.
A chance!
In the back, the corpse
abruptly shook. A black shadow instantly crawled out from the corpse whose head
was cut in half and flew off into the distance.
When Jian Yi returned
from his daze, it was already too late.
That black shadow let out
a pleased laugh. It was just about to escape with its life, however, just at
this moment, an Ice Blade rained down from above. It penetrated through this
black shadow and pinned it to the floor while keeping it alive.
"What is
this?" Wen Xuan's surprised voice sounded.
He just noticed this black shadow's movement and immediately
threw an Ice Blade out. Although he didn't know what it was, not letting it
escape was definitely a good choice.
The black shadow yelled
incoherently, struggling madly under the Ice Blade's restraint, clearly
panicking in pain.
"What the heck is this?"
Wen Xuan prompted his divine sword precursor to give a light cut on the black
shadow's body.
The black shadow
instantly jumped, making even more tragic noises, clearly in extreme pain.
Then, it yelled in a loud voice: "Hero, please spare me! Hero, please
spare me!"
It actually spoke human
language? Wen Xuan felt even more astonished.
He and Jian Yi circled
around this strange black shadow together, examining it at a closer distance.
Their expressions couldn't help
but change subtly,
because they saw this black shadow had all limbs, looking like a shrunken human
figure. How small was it? Spreading it out, it wasn't even the size of a palm.
No wonder it could hide inside the head of that corpse.
Such an appearance made Wen Xuan think about something
unpleasant: "Could it be..... a demon?"
"A type of demon.”
Jian Yi gave a definite conclusion: "A shadow attachment demon."
"There are actually
demons in the North Ning Continent?" Wen Xuan's expression was unusually
unsightly. The tip of his fingers moved slightly. Clearly, he was just about to
prompt the divine sword precursor to completely eliminate this thing.
"Hero, please spare
me! Hero, please spare me! Hero, please spare me!" This shadow attachment
demon yelled even more urgently. If he wasn't pinned to the floor, he would
have gotten on his knees before the two: "The big hero is magnanimous.
Please just spare this lowly one this time! This lowly one still has an 80 year
old mother...... pei! What this lowly one meant to say was, this lowly one will
definitely follow your every beck and call, and risk life and limb to help you
out in the future!"
This pile of words were
spoken so slickly, Wen Xuan could hardly withstand it. However, since this was
a demon, he had to eliminate it.
Just as he was about to
strike with his sword, Jian Yi pressed down on the back of his hand:
"Shixiong, this guy might be useful in the future."
"That's right! I'll
be useful! I definitely will be useful!" That shadow attachment demon
instantly grabbed the chance to continue: "This lowly one is not the same
as those deranged demonic fiends. This lowly one is a good demon. Really, I'm a
good demon. I didn't even do anything evil before today! Even this body died on
its own back then on the side of a road first, so this lowly one just borrowed
it to use in the passing!"
After these words, instantly, there was silence.
Feeling like that he
might have said the wrong words, the shadow attachment demon even stopped his
incessant begging.
Wen Xuan asked with a
slight smile: "In other words, this cultivator Zhao from Cerulean Feathers
was already a corpse even before facing me and all of his actions just now were
done by you?"
The shadow attachment
demon instantly started shivering in waves: "This lowly one, this lowly
one... but this lowly one wasn't successful! So I still haven't done anything
bad!"
Wen Xuan called over the
divine sword precursor and pointed it at this thing's body: "The parasite
you put in me, what the heck is it exactly?"
"Shixiong, don't
rush." Jian Yi persuaded from the side: "Although it's a demon, it
can still be bound by contract. As long as we make a death contract with him,
we can use him anyway we want and interrogate him slowly in the future."
Although he said these
words, at this moment the shadow attachment demon was too nervous, and
immediately tossed out
all of the information
relating to the empathy parasite like pouring out a cup of beans: "I'll
talk, I'll talk! The biggest effect of suffering the empathy parasite is that
in the future, your lives will be connected, living and dying together!
However, I can tell that the both of you are fortunate people who will live
hundreds of years. So this effect really isn't anything! So please spare me
this once!"
Life and death connected? In other words, if one died, the
other would immediately follow.
Wen Xuan's face
darkened: "How do we break it?"
"Break it, break
it......" The shadow attachment demon stammered for quite a while, clearly
not very sure himself. He quickly yelled out: "It's not like you must
break it! I see you two have such a good relationship. Leaving this parasite
will give you a huge benefit as well!"
"Benefit?"
"It can increase
your cultivation. Half the work, twice the result!" The shadow attachment
demon yelled: "Every night, you guys just need to du......"
Puu! The voice wasn't
finished. The rest of the words didn't come out of its mouth yet, Jian Yi
already raised his sword resolutely and promptly cut the shadow in half.
Wen Xuan looked at him in
astonishment: "What's the matter? It seemed to be saying something just
now."
Jian Yi's face color was
black and red. Black enough to condense into ink. Red enough to burn: "It
wasn't saying anything!"
